22 A War to End Slavery Confederate economy is wrecked The Union has a better way of raising revenue for the war 1862 Green banks The north uses national banking The North s economy grows exponentially during the war A Patriotic Gore 1 Honor and courage The ethos of Honor on soldiers on both sides more on the Confederate side The value place where the individual stood in society depended on the community Many of the soldiers fought alongside men who they had grown up together it was like being in a bubble everyone was aware of what you were doing during the war and if you had the Honor Courage to keep ghting The communities pushed their soldiers to be brave and prove their manhood This was the cause of why many soldiers fought recklessly real man settle their di erences out in the open 2 Ri ed musket Before the ri ed musket soldiers only had Smooth born muskets that could only reach 75 yards A ri ed musket had a killing range of up to 400 yards The war was mainly a Frontal Assault it was e ective at rst but then became suicidal when the ri ed musket was in the hand of the soldiers Generals continued to do the frontal assault Gettysburg 3rd day Robert E Lee goes to Pennsylvania looking for a showdown He think he is going to win regardless of the numbers Many consider the battle of Gettysburg the turning point of the Civil war Lee attacked for 2 days straight on the third day he ordered his army to cross a mile of open led and meadows before they could reach the Union army One whole unit of the Union army got 100 casualties meaning that 100 of its soldiers were either killed or injured Ulysses S Grant Lost over 30 thousand men in a month B Confederate War How does the South ghts the North Defensive war They hoped for European interference War of treason The South should expand the war till the North grows tired of ghting 1 Rich man s war poor man s ght Slaveholders v Non slaves holders Yeoman farmers Non slave holders could use any open space available for the growth of cattle Non slave holder HAD TO ght the war By the 3rd summer of the war the Yeoman farmers left the war got tired of ghting for slaveholders 1 2 of the South soldiers had left the army 2 Centralization v States rights American revolution was against centralized gov t C Lincoln s War Lincoln is consider on of the best war time presidents in U S History He had little political experience Virtually no military experience 1830 fought against the Black Hawks Forceful president Historians accused him of being like a dictator He took away the Writ of habeas corpus Lincoln gave Generals the right to arrest civilians 1 War objectives Save the Union His plan had a 3 fault strategies 2 Blockade the South Split the Confederacy Capture Richmond Anaconda strategy squeeze the life out of the South Split confederacy in half getting control of the Mississippi River 3 Poor military command George Macmillan Well organized Well framed Reluctant to send his army out into the battle eld Told Lincoln to keep sending men 4 Dissension 5 Constitutional Dictatorship D Ending Slavery 1 Con scation Acts 2 Compensation for loyal slaveowners 3 Emancipation Proclamation 1863 January 1st 1863 emancipation proclamation frees all slaves that the confederate doesn t control Does the emancipation proclamation freed anyone It acknowledges that the war had become about slavery slavery had to be dismantled 200 000 African American are soldiers in the war ght for the North Lincoln moves slowly and reluctantly to end slavery
