Events that Promoted the Jeffersonian Vision of Independence 1800 1860 Anti Federalist Everyone s a farmer VA KY Resolutions 1798 1799 States can nullify laws Declared Alien and Sedation Acts void The Virginia and Kentucky resolutions were written to limit the power of the National government and increase state s power by stating that all power not directly given to the National government is given to the states through the 10th amendment Election of 1800 Jefferson won states more power The Election of 1800 represents a shift from a Federalist John Adams United States to an Anti Federalist country Jefferson advocates for a weak central government because if they have too much power the U S could become a dictatorship and the people and states won t be valued Louisiana Purchase 1803 Jefferson believed that as long as hard working farmers could acquire land at reasonable prices then America could prosper as a republic of equal and independent citizens The Louisiana Purchase opened up a lot of new inexpensive land for Americans to live on and farm Embargo Act of 1808 US refused to trade with Britain or France in order to stay neutral however the Act backfired and had adverse effects on the economy The act was created by Jefferson Panic of 1819 distrust of large banks National bank bankruptcy The Panic of 1819 was the first major US Depression that caused Americans to distrust banking Erie Canal easy for small famers to trade with coast The Erie Canal was the first effective route of interstate commerce between the Atlantic coast and the interior of the US It gave farmers an easier and cheaper route than any other form of transportation at the time so it promoted Jefferson s ideal country compromised of farmers SC Nullification states can intervene Congress passed a high tariff that hurt South Carolina s export economy so South Carolina called a convention and nullified the law Jackson viewed this as an attack on the Union and Congress passed the force bill that allowed federal troops to collect the tariff which was later taken away by the 1840s Jackson s Bank Veto money aristocracy no central bank 1832 congress considers a bill to recharter the national bank It passes but Jackson vetoes it because he wants to destroy the National Bank Annexing of Texas more land for white men promotes independent citizens Lincoln s Election 1860 Pro North Lincoln was the first successful Republican to win an election
