Melbourne Sports minded city that includes Football soccer cricket and Phillips island is to the south and a famous place to visit to see horse racing penguins Northeast of Melbourne are the Australian Alps Western Australia It s area is bigger than Texas and Alaska combined Mostly a Mediterranean climate Perth is the capital Unspoiled beaches extend along the coast north of Perth Mining is very important to this economy Australian Capital Territory In the 1900s the country needed a new capital A Compromise was the reached between Sydney and Melbourne Midway between the two cities town It is also the center for Maori culture Waitomo caves is on the north end of the north island Millions of glowing insects hang from the ceiling of the caves Wellington is the capital The city has a mixture of modern building and Victorian architecture Ferries connect Wellington to the South island This journey takes about 3 hours South Island island Some of the world s most unspoiled scenery may be on this Snowcapped peaks of the Southern Alps Christchurch is the largest city It is New Zealand s 3rd largest city It is considered the most English city outside England Mount Cook National Park contains the Tasman glacier which is one of the longest besides the Himalaya Queenstown is called the adventure capital of New Zealand It is south island s most popular resort Commercial bungee jumping began in 1988 Fiordland is where mountains meet the sea and flooded valleys The Fiordland National Park AKA the country s national park is located here Oceania The number of visitors in Oceania is very small This area consists of three islands Fiji Guam and French Fiji is known as the cross roads of the pacific Fiji is also known for FIREWALKING Oceania is about 2 3rds of the way between Hawaii and New Polynesia Zealand Viti Levu is the capital French Polynesia is acclaimed the most beautiful islands Most of these islands are high islands protected by coral reefs French Polynesia is an overseas territory of France Tahiti is Polynesia s largest island Bora Bora is a volcano encircled by reefs and a blue lagoon Guam is a US territory and an important US Naval base Residents are US citizens Agana is the capital Other destinations in Oceania Melanesia includes islands in the western pacific Papua New Guinea consists of eastern half of the New Guinea this is anthropologists paradise Vanuatu contains 13 islands and dozens of smaller ones Micronesia is a low coral island in the Pacific North Northern Marianas is a stretch from Guam to Japan The Mariana Trench is the deepest of the oceans canyons Federated states of Micronesia consists of four states Island groups spread throughout Tonga is located in the Southwest pacific They claim to be the first
