Spoken in the ABC Islands.• Bermuda – Worlds most northerly group of coral islandsA. The Towns1. Hamilton - capital. It is not known for nightlife. It is nota beach town and has no casinos. 2. St. George – old capital. Cruise ships might spend a few nights here. Pubs and nightlife are found here. o Bermuda has more golf courses per square mile than any other country.• Bahamas – Chain of about 2,400 keys and 700 coral islands. The rays swim north around the entire area. North Wall dive off Grand Cayman is a drop to the bed of the ocean.B. Jamaicaa. Kingston: capitalb. Port Antonio: East side of the island. On the Island: El Yunque is the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. Ponce is the second largest city. Rio Camuy Cave Park (Worlds largest system of caves).• U.S. Obtained Puerto Rico after Spanish-American War.• Casa blanca, el jugementoLesser AntillesA. Leeward Islandsa. U.S. Virgin Islands: St. Thomas, St. Croix and St. John. Denmark ruled these islands for almost 300 years. They sold the islands to the United States in 1917.b. British Virgin Islands: Approximately 60 islands, but only 15 are inhabited. Road town is the major port. c. Anguilla: Excellent beaches, good snorkeling, sailboats for rent, stylish hotels, British dependency.• No duty freed. St. Martin/St. Maarten: St. Martin is a Department of France. It shares a hilly island with St. Maarten, which is part of the Netherlands Antilles. Dining on the French side & casinos and nightlife on the Dutch.e. St. Barthelemy (St. Barts): Small rocky island. Belonged to Sweden for many years. Famous for luxury lodgings and gourmet restaurants.f. Saba: Part of the Netherland Antilles. The bottom is the capital and it is in the bottom of a volcano’s crater. Lodging on Saba is limited. Premier scuba diving destination. g. St. Kitts and Nevis: For years it was known as England’s mother colony in the West Indies. Attractions include golf courses, restaurants, deluxe hotels and a small casino.h. Antigua and Barbuda: English background. Together they form an independent country. It is the largest of the Leeward Islands. Has small casinos, but very popular for sailing.B. Windward Islandsa. Martinique: Northern most of the Windward Islands. Itis the flagship of French Culture in the Caribbean. Busy cruise ship port. Volcano destroyed most of the island & killing over 30,000 people in 1902.• Club Med has a resort hereb. St. Lucia: British background. This island has great mountain scenery with an interior rain forest. The beaches have black volcanic sand. c. St. Vincent & the Grenadines: Became British in 1783. Kingston is the capital. This is the center for yacht charters. Idyllic beaches and many luxury resorts with a European feel to it.d. Grenada: The “Spice Island”. World’s leading producer of nutmeg. Tourists can see the oldest rum plant in the Caribbean. The island was under French and British rule for many years. Beautiful beaches, gardens and many spice shops. • Most southern of the Windward Islands• 1983 – Marines had to rescue medical students studying at the hospital on the islande. Barbados: Bridgetown is the capital. History was bound with England and the fortunes of sugar. George Washington visited this island when tourism began in the 18th century. The “Crop Over Festival” is held during the last week in July. About half the visitors arrive by cruise ships. Known for its beautiful architecture, plantations, extensive underground caverns and surfing. C. Islands off the South American Coasta. “ABC Islands”: Aruba, Bonaire & Curacaob. Aruba: Enjoys a very hot and dry climate, which is perfect for tourism. The capital is Oranjestad and it is a very small town. Casino gambling is available and the nightlife is very active. The beaches are popular aswell. • Official language is Papiamentoc. Bonaire: The locals say that tourists “come here to dive, eat, dive, sleep and dive.” Ideal for tourists who enjoy water sports. d. Curacao: Has emerged as a major tourist destination thanks to casinos, diving and duty-free shopping. Willemstad is the capital and administrative center of the Netherlands Antilles. Known for its “Old World” atmosphere. Dutch ways are evident not only in the architecture, but also customs and food. Other Destinations in the Caribbeana. Turks and Caicos: located in the southeastern end of the Bahamas. Beautiful beaches, but does not have the facilities to accommodate large cruise ships. Providenciales is the most developed for tourism. It has a casino and the world’s only
