ANTH 101 Carstens absence We are NOT using a textbook in this class they are TOO EXPENSIVE What s the trade off You need to attend the classes Even though the PowerPoints are posted they do not give you all the information given in class We ll be giving random short quizzes at the end of a class about the content of that day s class If you are here and can answer the questions you will earn extra credit points You may talk with each other and help each other out in answering these quizzes If you skipped or missed class or had to leave early for whatever reason you cannot earn those points This course Divided into three parts A test on each part Also worksheets due The final test is on last third AND comprehensive There will be online study quizzes to help you prepare for the tests These will NOT count toward your grade There will be NO EXTRA CREDIT other than our in class end of class quizzes The first two tests each count 16 5 of your grade The final test is 33 So the 3 tests together count 66 of your grade In addition to the 3 tests grades will be based on 10 online Worksheets graded immediately totaling 25 of your grade 4 Question sheets on the movies we watch totaling 8 of your grade You can easily ace 33 of your grade 1 Pay attention and answer the questions given during each movie and don t skip class and miss any movie 2 Print out the online Worksheet questions then look up the answers for each question there is no reason you shouldn t get perfect scores on each worksheet then complete each ON TIME by the hour day deadline Foolish students have dropped one or more grades in the past because they Didn t complete all the online Worksheets Turned in worksheets late Skipped class on the day of a movie Worksheet DUE DATES are posted in the syllabus plus listed on p 2 of syllabus Movie show dates are also listed Taking notes in class Take notes in class PowerPoints will be posted under DOCUMENTS in Blackboard you might want to print 3 to a page and bring to class then take notes on your printout Later that day review the notes you took Here s another tip for getting a good grade Print out the vocabulary list NOW As we go along in class write in the definitions Then you will have a list of definitions to study Knowing the vocabulary allows you to ace a large part of each test Worksheets W1 due Sept 4 Due dates are listed on syllabus They go off line at noon on the due date It is up to you to complete each Worksheet on time Be sure to print a copy of your Worksheet at the time that you submit so you will have a copy to study from Check the Gradebook on Blackboard after you submit to make sure you properly submitted You should see a score Movies Expected show dates are listed in your syllabus Movie titles are in italics Under ASSIGNMENTS in Blackboard Print a copy of the questions for the movie Bring your question sheet to class and answer the questions while you watch the movie Turn in your answer sheet as you leave the room If the questions require 2 sheets STAPLE them before you come to class What if you are absent on the day of a movie At your first chance hopefully that same day or before Send an email to Dr Anthropology is holistic comparative interdisciplinary and cross cultural Anthropology has four major subfields of study Cultural Anthropology Study of cultural behavior Linguistic Anthropology Study of verbal and nonverbal communication ANTH 102 introduces these two subfields Archaeology The study of cultural behavior through material remains Biological anthropology The study of humans and their closest relatives as biological species ANTH 101 this course introduces these two subfields Biological anthropology Includes specialists such as Paleoanthropologists focus on study of past humans through fossil remains Primatologists focus on study of our closest relatives nonhuman primates In this course we will use the scientific method Process by which phenomena are explained through observation and posing and testing hypotheses hypothesis tentative but testable explanation of relationship between certain phenomena or variables theory system of validated hypotheses that explains
