change But it is not technology that drives culture it is how people use technology With technology money too shapes mass communication Audiences can be either the consumer or the product in our mass media system As oral preliterate cultures gave way to literate cultures literacy became the avenue to power and control over one s life Media literacy the ability to effectively and efficiently comprehend and use any form of mediated communication consists of several components o critical thinking skills enabling the development of independent judgments about media content o an understanding of the process of mass communication o an awareness of the impact of the media on individuals and society o strategies for analyzing and discussing media messages o an awareness of media content as a text providing insight into contemporary culture content o a cultivation of enhanced enjoyment understanding and appreciation of media o the development of effective and responsible production skills o the development of an understanding of the ethical and moral obligations of media practitioners Media literacy skills include o the ability and willingness to make an effort to understand content to pay attention and to filter out noise o an understanding of and respect for the power of media messages o the ability to distinguish emotional from reasoned reactions when responding to content and to act accordingly o the development of heightened expectations of media content o a knowledge of genre conventions and the recognition of their mixing o the ability to think critically about media
