Distracted Mental States Only 10 of athletes usually have them The Underachiever In an athletic setting Typically the person doesn t believe in themselves Always thinks they are incapable or not worthy Usually from season to season there is a year of growth The underachiever will not see their achievements Alex Lynn the basketball player for UMD has grown so much both with physical skill and muscle that kid is not an underachiever He really believes in himself An athlete is expected to perform at a certain caliber regardless of skill level that s how you ll perform If you believe you can t you won t Think of the courses you took as a freshman compared to what you re taking now You cannot stay in the freshman mental state you need to challenge yourself This is the same for the athlete Overcoming the Role of the Underdog You know a team is ranked better so what do you do Coach needs to mentally prepare them so they play smarter than what their physical abilities are Have the team watch themselves play greatly then have them watch the other team playing terribly Cannot think of winning or losing need to think of what you need to Don t dwell on the strengths of the opponent that will just reinforce Should focus on your own strengths and not your weaknesses but be aware of weaknesses and try not to make mistakes do your self doubt Set realistic goals lot for the underdog Have to get through it in a positive way the coaches and parents need to do a Choking The Disease of Me A universal experience it is always miserable It is selfinduced Performing poorly in a stressful situation due to a lack of mental preparation Failing to understand accept reality of the competition your facing vs the skill level of your opponent Over estimating your opponent Under estimating your opponent Really failed at a critical time Think about the curse of the gifted athlete the under estimate opponents that opponent eventually caught up with them though Under estimating your own strength or overestimating your own strength Choking always occurs when you focus on the wrong things Lose control of thought processes focus Let external things take you out of what you re doing Choking begins with our thoughts Need control of our minds and buy into mental toughness Choking creates tension you need to be relaxed in a stressful situation Tensing of the muscles can cause physical performance erosion Compromises ability to be in charge of the body physically Choking is the opposite of peak performance One of the worst things that can happen It s inevitable Will happen at least once in your life Overcoming the Choke Build Confidence in yourself Experience success as fast as you can right after a choke Confidence is key Don t dwell on mistakes forgive self and move on Be prepared Practice practice practice Practice is crucial Rid self of temptation to become emotional Poor preparation is an invitation to choking We learn more from our mistakes than we do from our accomplishments
