In Class Group Activity discussing Tinbergen’s Questions on Behavior.Current LectureThese notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.* Note: We did an in-class activity discussing and dissecting Tinbergen’s Four Questions of Behavior. Unless you were here, you will not be able to fully understand the activity. I will briefly describe what we did, but it will not be in-depth.I. To begin the activity, we were given a note card and a sheet of paper with three abstracts. We were supposed to read the abstracts and pick one of the Tinbergen’s Four questions with each abstract that best answers one specific question. The four questions are: What is Causation of the behavior? What is Development of the behavior? What is the Survival Value of the behavior? What is the Evolution of the behavior? II. Next, we were given another abstract, different from the three on the first paper and different from every one else. We quickly skimmed through the abstract and were told to try to match which of Tinbergen’s Questions most closely related to our abstract.III. Once we made our own decision, we were put into different groups and were asked to come to agroup conclusion of what question relates most with Tinbergen’s questions. In our group, there was an overall theme with different papers. We were asked to discuss and come to a conclusion with each paper on whether it was closest to Causation, Developmental, Survival Value, an Evolution. IV. There were four different overarching themes that the papers were in. The specific sections werefish, Migration, Bird Dances and parasites. With each section, the groups came to a conclusion and presented their conclusion to the rest of the class.V. In the discussion, we were able to distinguish between the four questions by specific key words. Causation and developmental are both how questions. Causation is basically anything that discusses what is happening internally and the function underneath it than it is most likely causation. The developmental is anything that has to do with the animal learning the behavior through out its life, the key word is learning. Survival value and evolution are both why questions. Survival Value is anything that has to do with increasing the fitness value of the animal and species. Evolution is anything to do with the lineage or phylogeny of the behavior and can be traced back many lineages.VI. To wrap up the class activity, Dale read segments of her own research she has been doing with the right and left handedness of fish and we were supposed to flash a card at which of the four questions that segment related
