i. We can talk about it as being very limited- in sense we are only focusing on here and now and we should think of big pictureii. Thinking of short termiii. Another more positive way of thinking about it tooInfluence of culture and religion on time…quote:“the most precious gift we can offer anyone is our attention.” – Thich Nhat Hahnv. the present time focus is intimately related to our notion of separation- when we talked about attention managementvi. the construals are so important bc out of the way we think about past, present, future comes so much else*vii. these are the only given dimensions of time!** in terms of our biology bc we all have sense of past, present, futurea. At Blanton- Buddhist ritual of constructing sand mandalab. Focus is on= permanentc. We are getting influences from a lot of different cultures that may work well togetherd. Blanton brought Monks to UT to constructe. It’s a Buddhist ritual to bless the Earthf. Monks train for years to learn the ritual and memorize oral textsg. 100s of mandalas each with own meaningh. 6 days placing millions of grains of sandi. Buddhist tradition is really focused on impermanence= focus on present moment**i. this is similar- we can use this interchangeably- “im in the flow, in the zone”ii. so anything that you become totally involved/immersed iniii. you lose track of everything elseiv. a state that is hard to describev. “im in the flow/in the zone”vi. Effortless- you do have to have skillvii. You have to be somewhat skilled at it in order for things to become effortlessviii. Once you have done it for so long, trust it and trust yourself you get it out of the way and you are in fully right mind state of being*ix. Key to flow is the temporal element*x. Which is why people associate this with ecstasyxi. Because theres no consciousness- no thoughts of if im good enough, its literally just what is happening before youxii. Past/future/noone/nothing else mattersxiii. Between your skill and the challenge of itxiv. If something is really easy- you wont get in state of flowxv. If its too hard- you wont eitherxvi. If its challenging and you have right level of skill where its just within your reach- positive not defeating challenge= that’s when you reach state of flow*xvii. Theres no sense of worry or fear in flowAUTOTELIC= About certain personality traits or states of being for the short termJust doing an activity for the sake of doing itNo other goal than just the activity itselfNo thinking about why you are doing it or how its going to pay offEx/ That’s play- we just play and do it- no other outcomeEx/ people would go with fling machines- we all knew we weren’t gonna fly but to see what can you do – you aren’t really trying to fly (the goal) you are just trying for fun to see what you can doEXOTELIC: The opposite of autotelicWhy people are good students- people are all about the grades/GPA- motivated by a goal*Everyone is a little autotelic- even the less is at least 10%He uses experience sampling methods- beep people and report what they were doingBaesd upon that some people most than 70% of their day was autotelicBeing a scholar- your job is to judge/criticize things – the system pushes you towards judging things (like Meyers Briggs test)But when you know this- you can do/find things or make a point of saying- you want to be goal-orientedRelated to Positive Organizational Scholarshipi.
