a. Chronemics= the way in which time is bound to itb. Reflexivity= you have reflexive understanding- ability to step back and look at assumptions and outcomes to determine whether we want to move forward/back in certain waysWe have talked about historical/cultural diff across nations and timeTo have chronemic literacy have to be reflexive- and as you learn more- it’s a continual loop- you have to stop and think and reappraise and as you go further in, you continue to think about the ways in which we create ourselves and others in conversation1. Truly chronemic literate person- the behaviors are evidenced and sustainable temporal practices- positive communication- thriving and flourishing2. That person gets it- they have tools and competencies- you find behaviors time related that are sustainable that allow you and others to thrive and flourishi. Industrial capitalism- where time is money comes from1. Industrial economy- Charlie Chaplin- economy depended on his physical input and natural resources (like coal, or whatever are necessary to fuel industry**)2. It called us to certain time discipline- this was beginning to punctuality- BECAUSE time was money- so of course punctuality mattered bc time was money*Knowledge Economy= That’s why in knowledge economy- where its about our intellectual capability- burnout becomes issues bc we cant think 24/7- we love our jobs so this is a whole other kind of work ethicWe can create value at anytime of the day- so we associate it with globalization and things rapidly becoming obsoleteSpeed- get as much done is short amount of time- and we have so much info at our disposal- now its all about multitasking/speed and trying to manage it allAttention economy is moving toward (its newer)…Its all about the audienceAdvertisers putting teenagers to work- this is next thing that’s creating value (As opposed to intellectual and producing something brilliant) this is simply holding someone’s attention*Bc one of the scarcest resources in 2014= attention! We are still in industrial and knowledge…but A NEW economy that is novel to us is thisAll about how can you capture finite attention that is getting obliterated bc of information overload- who can hold someone’s attentionShort-term fame and shock value= if everyone has shorter attention span, how do you hold their attention? Shock value- a lot of what you find on youtube “can you believe that?” (feeding beast= 24 hour news cycle= came to be “can you believe that?”)i. You are entrained to clock, workweek, weekendsii. All about what you are contributing to at work* all of these are big punctuators in your sense of time (what entrain you)iii. We have data that suggests this is trueiv. TGIF, Blue Monday data suggest entrainment to these mid frequency pacers1. TGIF= we are pacing our lives around the weekend2. Blue Monday= people are more sad and that reflects a disentrainment3. Turning off email notifications/social media notifications= bc those are things we tend to be distracted by and stops what we are doing4. That reflects entrainment5. Data is very similar6. Every 11 minutes we interrupt ourselves- that’s same amount of time we get an interruption7. That’s high frequency- regular throughout dayNOW WITH ATTENTION ECONOMYwhat you are entrained to is an everpresent audience, all moments are branding opportunitiesTimeless time= guy from USC- wrote in 2000- a book that says info society doesn’t actually happen- Castels predicted that a time isn’t bound by clock but instead bound by other people* by your connections* literally- you replace clocks with connections to people- that’s what you are seeing in attention economy!a. 19 year old- created advertising network called “Keep”- takes moments that already exist in timeb. app makers can use keep’s network to use every moment of your life as a branding opportunityc. ad pops up once you do something on a gamed. they don’t call themselves ads- they use rewards and momentse. award of moments-f. manipulators of social media- like hunger games- social media rips people apart- put in arena where you are forced to survive on their owni. you have sponsors when you go into arenaii. have to do things to get people to like youiii. gamemakers watchiv. get people to like you to survivei. marked by: Instant gratification + hyperconnectivity= URGENCYii. they are part of attention economyiii. millennials marked by- more concerned with balance- don’t feel need to work only, want personal and work lifeiv. Generation Z= marked by instant gratification and hyperconnectivity- so important because= when you combine these it leads to INCREDIBLE AMOUNT OF URGENCY*1. Used to have to wait to get a toy- now they download right away on iPads- get anything you want at moments noticeb. **this is where Chronemic literacy mattersi. if we know we are moving into attention economy and we know that this is because of our short attention spans- we are prone to distractionii. this generation who is barely just learning to drive- on road with us-a. Distracted Driving increases your crash riskb. Texting increases it 2300%c. In TX- risk is going up and others are going downd. TX gets #1 for drinking and driving crashese. 16-20 age group- all 20sf. talking on phone increases crash risk by 400%g. most people say “I’m different”h. Toggle Tasks- multi-tasking can be deadlyi. Your brain Toggle Tasks= cant focus on driving 100%- bc giving 50% to convo and 50% to drivingCMS 372T Lecture 20Outline of Last Lecture I. UrgencyOutline of Current Lecture II.
