i. We just think about all we have to do- we feel emotionally overloadedii. US is only place where there is no vacation paid- doesn’t mean people don’t have it- it just means fewer people have it/take it- **ITS NOT REQUIRED FOR employers to give you paid time offiii. Says something broadly about our culture…1. Where they have more- people more likely to take vacation and see that as part of life2. Whereas in our culture- people may not take vacation as much3. In a lot of those countries- there are times of year where it is holiday timesi. overwork is not just American problem- its cultural problemii. Karoshi is actually a name for it- if theres a name for it that means its not a rare occurrence that means its something that continues to happen and might cont to happen- they work so much that their body just gives outiii. Objectively- how many hours you work and how many weeks off you get from vacation- its very objective- your body has certain needs for rest for recuperation-iv. Intersubjective- about the value of work- culture is very steep in Protestant work ethic where work in itself has value so we tend to work morev. Subjective- theres wiggle room- sense of it being okay to take a day off or quick break, using some space- some people don’t have this but its all about managing your spacei. Like looking at Manny vs Phil and their diff subjective timeii. Activities that you have to complete and that’s different for everyoneiii. The intersubjective times you have already set for your week (its all interrelated even though we can distinguish among the three, they all work together)iv. These are created intersubjectivelyv. The day is objective- week is inter…but we have agreed so its kinda objectivevi. Month is objective in general and so is yearvii. But week is totally made upviii. The intersubjective we might attribute to Monday vs Fridayix. That is shared sense culturallyx. That’s why we have phrases “TGIF” there is intersubjective sense of what Friday feels like- diff to someone else who works 5 day work week- not everyone has thatxi. But everyone has that notion of Mondayxii. Ex/ A Case of the Mondays- intersubjective pacesetter- we all talk about Monday blues- its common intersubjective thing- a lot of feel that way on Monday’s not just you- weekend allows you to disentrain and then you have entrainment issue on Mondayxiii. Ex/ Hump Day- camel ad- guess what day it is?i. It’s a person or organism and another person or organism- entrainment is when one captures the pace or rhythm or the otherii. Importantly- why this is so relevant for comm it invovles interaction between one entity and its environmentiii. We all have endogenous pacer- some of us walk super fast and others don’t (we aren’t even aware we are fast walker until someone is it- that’s our endogenous pace- everyone is born with it its our natural pace)iv. The environment is exogenous pacer- in which we have to decide through interaction- do we adopt that other pace or become entrained to this faster/slower pace or do we resist itv. Entrainment involves endogenous and exogenous and when the come together one will win or they wont be part of same systemCMS 372T Lecture 5Outline of Last Lecture I.
