i. Fast vs slow- speed crowds out slow time, it has an addictive quality so that when you are trying to have tempo guisto (right pace) it gets crowded outii. Does slow time get crowded out by fast time? It takes back seat to your tasks at hand- somehow, the pace of speed and quiet time you hope to find is hard to findiii. You tend to speed up more and moreiv. Ex/ do you find yourself speeding on highway- even when you aren’t in a hurry- you still speed up and then you’re like oh well I don’t even have to speedv. Speed has this addictive quality*a bridge form of communicationclassical example/ the game telephone we played as kids- where you are both just doing it- not going back and checking sources- just going through and telling really quick, just going as fast as you canExamples/ when you didn’t give yourself time to read a book you sparknote it- Cliffnotes- just to get the jist of a bookWhat can happen to those aspects of your life/job that are based on communication if you do abridge or simplify? What happens when you simplify and the whole point in communicationi. anything with quality has variation (anything hand-made or artisan made, has variation as part of natural process-bc its higher quality)ii. Assembly line- produces high levels of quantity and very controllediii. *so if you think about going to McDonald’smost likely you will get food fast and will be the same as every other fry or burger you ate there- pretty much controllediv. vs. Mom and Pop restaurantday to day cooking is wonderful food but slightly diff, more variation in that- slower to come out and might be better tasting but you will know it varies*b. Point of assembly line effect (you want in some situations)= standardization and time- savingi. Saves time and standardizes things-ii. Underlies more-better-faster zeitgesit- you are usually kinda pickyiii. Efficiency is fast but effectiveness is betteriv. Getting both doesn’t really happenv. You typically have to choose between which thing you want (quality and variation or quantity and control)i. feed thing beast- you wont be as precise, you will get things wrong- you will just have to decide on a continuum- (how much precision and speed- have to try to find a happy balance)1. high frequency- less precision, low frequency has more contributed to iti. So when we say that speed demands spacespeed demands availability and always being connectedii. No matter where you are, 24/7, speed demands that you are availableiii. Everything has to be available for speed to proceed- the movie factory worker lineiv. Connection= wherever you are in space (whatever kind of thing you are doing) ex/ dr ballard- didn’t want to lose time by cancelling class- shes not in same space, but what it becomes in globalized society is that she is still connected-1. Ex/ if you are working on project team- kid on Apple, project manager- when they are live on some new product/service- he has to be available –i. Not only what we all do, but it spreads to diff parts of things we are doing- not just one thing but multiple and multiple people possiblyii. The faster an activity can be- (internet connection) the more small amounts of time matteriii. Recall when there was dial-up connections when something is fast, everything about it has to be fast otherwise we are like “wow this is slow”- classic= its contagious, it shifts itiv. Ex/ google fiber- and the impact of the speed good and bad-i. It’s a way of being- not just about speed- its more about philosophy of life and multiple ways of beingii. Ex/ slow food movement- how fast your food gets madeb. Adjectives that would describe this movement: calm, careful, receptive, still, intuitive, unhurried, patient, quality-over-quantity, reflectivei. What this movement wants to fosterc. Balance: TEMPO GUISTO= the right speedi. Its not about fast or slow speed, its about the RIGHT speed for that activity! Some activities should be slowii. Communication- should be time for both slow and fast communicationi. this has entrainment written all over it- its about BOTH- not about having to grow your own stuff to cook- just saying you should have space for bothCMS 372T 1st Edition Lecture 8 Outline of Last Lecture I. Speed leads to simplificationThese notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. Some of the meaning can get lost (abbreviations in text messages) – we literally have abbreviations in texting- we don’t just abbreviate the word, but even the text message itself is very abbreviated and doesn’t have contextb. it leads to this abridging- your experiences in fast and slow, they also indicate that when the opposite (slower medium) theres more context, elaboration, morecan be shared, it’s a fuller conversation as opposed to a snipet of communication**III.
