a. Same Frenchmen being surprised at when he was invited to go to lunch with friend- how it was separated and not connected/engaged in way he thoughtb. Partner says something about scheduling-c. We haven’t talked about national culture- but time is so culturally a variant**d. All specific based on where you are frome. Friend- there is pace for these (spontaneous) kinds of opportunities- in America people have such a schedule where everything is part of their schedule (drop kids at school, work, meeting with work, home, gym) its all so strictly scheduled that there is no space for a little bit of improvisation*a. The tensions are culturalb. Person- studied abroad in Guatemala- for a year- she experienced the exact same epiphany about scheduling and how everything doesn’t have to be scheduled and she enjoyed life not highly scheduledc. When she came to states there was big problemd. “shes trying to maintain open scheduled without being isolated or branded a self-indulgent loser”i. Its difficult in our culture to avoid thatii. Its BECAUSE- Durkheim said its more than a scheduled- its not as simple as an agreement, it has this intersubjective value that has to do with morality and ethics1. Ex/ she has rules for fun time- not being strict on importance of schedule- they can take it day by day according to kids- bc you don’t want to seem like a jerk bc you do care about your friends2. Value on intersubjectivea. All technologies (smart phones, gps, maps, clocks) they are NEVER used in a VACUUM- we as social beings have agency and make decisions of what we care to do- so there is no technologyi. Technological Determinism= “cell phones are making people rude” it presumes that people can be made to do something by a technologyii. Socio Material Dimension= there’s a social dimension and a material dimension- so having smart phones with us everywhere may push us in certain directions, but if we culturally don’t value it- we wont carry it around- while technologies DO have a pull they don’t exist in a vacuum that can make us do anything**iii. Mechanized clock- a huge shift in human consciousness- from now till end of time- that came about in the 1400s but Chinese had almost perfect mechanized clock in 1200s and they just did it for art- in one of the dynasties- didn’t worry about it being precise- think about mechanized clock being a precise clock you can count on OR industrial capitalismiv. Bourgeoisie had moneyv. Needed to get people into factories and work a certain amount of timevi. Monastic clergy who also had cash- said prayers are important to have simultaneously done- important to have certain prayers done at certain times of the dayvii. The Benedictine Horarium- on the hour, people know when to pray- it would be good to have precise time telling devicesviii. And bourgeoisie said they needed it to….put money together and that’s how we cam up with mechanized clock**ix. A lot of religious traditions- solidarity around a particular time was very important**x. Clock was just a very specific iteration of these 2 things coming together bc it wasn’t new the idea of scheduling and religion**i. All the time at home with kids- made him write children music- he got in the mood about music- someone came with 2 things that make music manifest most: A CHECK AND A DEADLINE*ii. He said it does summon up all your best giftsiii. A woman called and asked him to do kid’s record- gave him check and deadline- an award record was born*iv. His experiences with kids have helped- it was difficult to write for them at first bc he didn’t know the simple thing that everything is exactly the same but you are writing about things that are within context of child’s experiencev. Hes an observant Jew- turned down Tonight Show and appearance conflicted with schedule so he turned it down- he couldn’t do it, he said it helps to have time that cannot be purchased to know that he has things/values that simply cant be purchased*vi. He waited a year and was on it when he could do itvii. Cant play on Friday nights- usually people are jealous- age of ever encroaching technology where you are never away from harness of your iphone, these are days if you are Jewish that you are completely off the grid, not being able to be reached/mind tampered by mediai. What we think of when you think of quality time- not stressed and not interrupted time with people you love/care aboutii. This is the busy person’s life approachI have lots of things to do so my quantity is limited but I can make quality time and I can make it in a particular space of time- and we can fit it all in…it will be unstressed, uninterrupted and awesomeiii. Kids were just happy to be with parents but parents said we don’t have time so we have to do these epochal timeiv. So they got lost in fungible and fungible can be epochal if you just let it bev. You’re intending for one thing but you make it not happen because there is so much stress around it**vi. Youre making something unpleasant that really didn’t have to bevii. Notion of quality time the idea is you have these wonderful epochal time- even though we are busy I want these moments people will always remember- so people think we will schedule something/events/trips- but that’s where people experience epochal moments you get forevera. **his pointscheduling quality time- sometimes just being around loved ones and not saying anything or doing anything can actually lead to a very valuable social experience-b. Silence is related to separation= its something that culturally is absent in our culture- its not something we value or celebratei. The key is on the intersubjective- that we do part of this importance on scheduling is the idea that we are certain that we are engaged in certain activities at the same timeii. We do like to schedule things with people bc we like to know the symmetry will align**iii. Something important from relational standpoint of us occupying the same time and space**iv. It creates something when we can do something togetherv. Theres a difference between- we can think of online class (you do things at diff times, not about symmetry) but you have a hybrid (somedays you are all there/some engagement, and the rest is not the same unless you have group project)vi. Durkehim said calendar matters bc temporal symmetry mattersa. Problems with forgetting- forget the term “work-life balance” its fundamentally problematic**b. Replace balance
