a. Brian Enob. Scale- work-life balancec. Ny- used city as spring board to move onto something elsed. Dysfunctional civil society- things didn’t work well- city was falling aparte. He proposed to live in Long Now societiesi. The Long View-book trying to think of business in long-termii. Came together for project that took name Long Now Foundationf. He claims- we think in Time Horizonsg. Hartley’s Frequency of Communiction= idea that we have high frequency types of comm and low frequency; content of them differs so much (when we think of whats in a tweet vs in a novel- meaning and sensibility)h. High-tech sector/fast-paced- when you see things in extreme helps you understand and appreciate better (ex/ cant forget memories- if you don’t get sleep- can help you see what you might experience on modest level)i. Silicone Valley- first to be concerned- people who are stuck in it, see how insane/culture is out of controlj. Ballard’s hope= high sigh in slowing and changing predominate zeitgeist coming from Silicone Valleya. Notion of time scale- she loves- has so many applicationsb. All time scale means= is that its different in terms of whether you are thinking of day/week/year/lifetimec. Scale (lifetime/week/day) and what occurs based upon that scale that you have chosen- you see it differentlyi. Ex/ Things you remember tonight you wont remember in 10 yearsd. Theres value just on daily basis*e. Ariana Huffington spoke about need for a 3rd metric to define success- she collapsed from exhaustion, hit her head- had moment “is this what success is like? Is this what I have been working for?” (means vs. end) she thinks it is relevant for her and for people- low-income people still an issue, working multiple jobs- talk about sustainability for work at all income levels-f. More-better-faster= dominant zeitgeist, she thinks competing one is non-linearity of time= shifting it*i. American Express- about interest in where culture is goingii. Life Twist study- says there are unplanned roads to success**g. LifeTwist Studyi. Unplanned roads to success- when asked people on what made them successful/what they wanted= people realized theres not a linear path to success**ii. Some sign that theres a thought that time is non-lineariii. And the future, the way we typically perceive future as holding answers- why don’t I know what im doing nextiv. Study= when looking at people you would judge are successful= they didn’t know, thing they thought they were gonna do isn’t what they were planningh. The Third Metric= both thing people thought they were going to do they aren’t doing- or thing they did do, didn’t find it valuable/didn’t want to do it**i. Ex/ Law- stories of former students she wrote letters of rec fo law school- went and decided not to or went and didn’tii. Ex/ Dr Ballard- wanted to be consultant but went to Academyiii. Didn’t think she wanted to do what she was going to doiv. You may not know what you want, and may realize theres something more beyond money and power that interest youi. Gilbert’s, Stumbling Upon Happinessi. Past, present, future is cognitive set of dimensions= because its how our brain works (right and left brain)ii. Stumbling Upon Happiness= on perils of affective forecastingiii. He found that people are terrible at predicting what will make them happy**iv. We are terrible at predicting what will destroy us**v. If we realize that- then it allows you to path a more affective relationship to the future because you don’t have a sense that this thing is going to make me happy so I have to do this thing1. Certain people think they “have to do” certain things2. But you don’t have to do anythingzzz3. There are things beyond our control that might change that4. Beauty of positive psychology and positive organizational scholarship= looking at ways how minds work to make us miserable and finding ways to use same things to give us better mental clarity and healtha. Eckhart Tolle- interview on book The Power of Nowb. He says provocative things about time and futurec. says time doesn’t exist*d. people don’t realize it but there is no past/future except memory or anticipation in your minde. there is such a thing as time/future- we use time to meet at certain times/daysf. time is something we cannot do without, we could even say time is what dominates this entire life we experience- the “surface level of reality” its completely dominated by timeg. people expect time will fulfill them and give them what they need/give them happiness but essentially true happiness is not by looking into future bc its intrinsically with living in present moment**h. present moment is all you ever have- always expecting in the next moment and never being fully in this moment is badi. all stress based on what happened in past/what should be happening in futurej. take deep breath and look at what is happening now in this moment- im ok- many people identiy there whole sense of self with problems, continuously involved in problems so whole identity is about problems they think they havek. as reality test- tell people- what problem do you actually have at THIS moment (not in hour or tomorrow) and sometimes people wake up when they hear it- bc they have challenge in the moment not a problem*l. for a problem to exist you need time and repetitive mind activity in present moment- it may be challenge, pain, emotion BUT NOT what we call “problem”m. how do I get out of my problems- get in present moment and see what is problem now* right now- I don’t have onei. really provocativeii. this is related to sustainability-iii. find time to plan for stressiv. when you worry about future just say “no thanks left brain I don’t need you right now”i. Point of Long Now Foundation- the future both on one hand, want to give it its place- want to give it sense of sustainability/that give us a future/sustainable life (ecofriendly businesses, etc), but at same time not only thinking in those termsii. Defined: reflexive understanding- we have had reflexive experience- (writing letters to people) reflecting, not multi-tasking, scheduling time- do this for considering different contextsiii. In the US- we are young- we are good at future, fast, intensity- there are other waysiv. Maybe in our youth, we can pull a little form diff traditions and understanding themv. Reflexivity means you think about it- not here is the answer but think about ways different actions in time impact you**vi.
