a. Learning to obey time is what happens when we acquire a sense of punctuality and we move to what happened before punctuality (task orientation- before mechanized clocks, sun dials weren’t employed in punctuality they were just roughmarkers)b. Mechanized clock brought in structured time that never existed and then we got punctualityc. These is most socially constructed of all enactments of time bc it couldn’t have existed the way it does now**i. Regarding a task or responsibility and it was born out of a work related task or responsibilityii. We can see it being applied to social settings as welliii. She studies work so she talks about definitions surrounding workiv. Three sites where we learn time- three sites where we learn puncutlaity- bc time orientation is what has shaped eveyhing elsev. Even though pace is most central (being related to every other dimension) PUNCTUALITY (in western conception of time is at the key/heart)i. the reason is that its both- because industrial work is what taught us to learn about time in a particular wayii. because in industrial Capitalism…time literally became moneyiii. prior to industrialism- there were tasks and people were paid for the work itselfiv. things need to grow/need to be planted-v. in factory, needed to pay people for their work- needed to pay themvi. industrialization- deskilling of labor- craftsman weren’t creating widgets/not just about craft- it was about quantity…getting as much out as you canvii. Factory work- just want to pay them for their time- no skill at all- pay them a lot because its boringb. If time is money…then certainly we want our money and we want you here on time**c. RELIGION:i. theres cultural dimension around punctuality- there is social value around temporal symmetryii. that you are showing my value as a person based on you keep this agreement with me- so it is disciplining portion of itselfiii. ex/ we aren’t late bc we know its wrong when we are late- we don’t think people will be harmed, we just know its wrong bc we are taught thativ. Protestant work ethic- whether you are protestant or not- doesn’t matter- it was all integrated into industrial capitalismv. Calvinism- idea was that you are all allotted a certain amount of time, before we die and we will then have salvation, based upon how we used this timevi. It was all about doing good deeds- you knew who was going to heavenvii. You want to make every opportunity to do a good deed and be virtuous- work was considered virtuous (you don’t want to take naps, you want to be virtuous)d. SCHOOL:we also at school- learn a ton about punctuality because the school is training for industry and civic lifeall these 3- we will all be thereand we will be taught a diff time discipline at all these 3 levelsi. it all comes back to thati. You learn this at work- it was a shift from the task to the timeii. So we are literally paying you for nothing but your timeiii. Be here on time, put in full timei. Becomes central like math/spelling bc if we cant be on time- industrial capitalism cant keep going- we cant have social norms if people were always lateii. Teaches you try your hardest to be on time- because we crave rewards and want to avoid punishmenta. Unschooling and about extreme parenting- you see where time is SO central to education and in a deeper way, even more than funding and being punished**b. Places where you see time being employed in service of education (in unschooling you see absence of scheduling, or other way):i. Tiger parents1. they try to make them use all available time/no time off…when boy says “I want to do nothing” she ignores it and says you have to do something2. The dad said “2 minutes” he said theres nothing more important that punctuality3. Its explicit part of the tiger parenting model4. She wants to “prepare them for economy they will be in”5. So again jobs became central to this and in terms of punctuality6. Punctuality in terms of industrialization and globalization is critical- this is why punctuality comes into play**ii. Unschooling1. Kids choosing everything is more important for lack of punctuality bc they would never be willing to follow someone else’s schedule2. How do you transition to unschooling to life of job or having to show up at certain time- where would you learn that3. Unschooling mom said she had obsessive relationship to schedule and couldn’t function if off- so she got rid of it4. Time played role to deciding to unschoolCMS 372T Lecture 15Outline of Last Lecture I. SpontaneityOutline of Current Lecture II. Clock TimeIII. PunctualityIV. Learning PunctualityV. Time-DisciplineVI.
