Trail Fades RICH 106 Starting Friday 2 October 2015 Corner of Spence and Ross Streets U S Joel R Poinsett 1825 The first US ambassador to Mexico The US is reinforcing what appears to be negative attitude by authorizing Poinsett to negotiate with Bustamante the purchase of Texas Poinsett was a diplomat who wasn t very diplomatic The Mexican government REFUSES to discuss this business with P cause they feel he s dishonored Mexico The Poinsettia was introduced by Joel Poinsett to the US Manuel de Mier y Ter n 1828 9 Undertakes a fact finding mission in Texas Was sent to see how Texas was doing His report states that the Anglos in Texas aren t paying taxes aren t respecting Mexican laws and they are not assimilating into Mexican culture In response to his report we have a final colonization law o The Colonization Law of 1830 April 6 Immigration prohibits immigration from the US Slavery laws will be enforced that prohibit importing slaves into Texas Subsidies will be awarded for Mexican and European settlers who move to Texas Trade it encourages trade between Texas and Mexico Introduce more custom officials to collect taxes A larger military presence in Texas more garrisons including convict soldiers What s a garrison A fort or presidio The Texas Perspective of the Colonization Law of 1830 Stephen Austin Still acting as mediators between Texas and the settlers Encourages the Texans to embrace the new law saying he can negotiate Problems with the Colonization Law of 1830 Early Disturbances Some of the concerns in Texas is that the capitol of Texas Castillo is too far South for business Creates inadequate government services especially land titles This sucks because most of our colonists moved here FOR land Colonization Law of April 6th banning imports of slaves and that our military is now going to be made of convict soldiers Note Between 1833 and 1855 there are 36 changes Our Anglos settling in Texas are used to setting their own shit up like their own militias and town councils There s differences in political ideology The Anglo s feel that everyone has inalienable rights and that the Central Government is violating these rights They believe that their rights are life liberty and property Their slaves are their property therefor they should be able to own them Lt Col Juan Davis Bradburn of the Mexican army Originally from Virginia but he has strong ties with Mexico He is appointed commander of a new garrison on Galveston Bay It will be named Anahuac Also hoped to create a customhouse there to collect taxes Bradburn encounters hostility from the Anglos when he attempts to enforce the custom laws collect taxes George Fisher sets up the customhouse for Anahuac He decrees that all ships leaving the local area had to pay duties in Anahuac Our colonists don t want to pay the taxes Runaway slaves from Louisiana pose the second problem in Anahuac Runaway slaves from Louisiana Bradburn outed them to the garrison a step that should ensured their freedom William Travis and Patrick Jack were hired to recover and return the runaway slaves Travis tries to block Bradburn by stating that a large force was heading to Anahuac from Louisiana However Bradburn didn t fall for this bluff and imprisoned them without trial for giving false information When the Anglos hear of Jack and Travis arrest they re pissed as hell They march and demand release They capture Bradburn s cavalry which had 19 men Now our Anglo colonists had something to negotiate with So they head into negotiations with Bradburn The colonists said they d trade his cavalry for Travis and Jack They release the cavalrymen and then Bradburn refuses to release Travis and Jack The colonists then withdraw to Turtle Bayou 2 Our colonists draw up a series of resolutions explaining their actions as they ve heard that the federalist faction is defeating the centralist administration Santa Anna leads the federalist faction He is heading the federalist resistance against the centralist government He s kicking the centralist s ass The Anglo s don t like the Centralists They re pledging allegiance to Santa Anna They re pledging allegiance to Santa Anna at this point because he is a Federalist The Anglo Rebels send to the Brazos for cannons Bradburn appeals for help from other Mexican military commanders in Texas Mexican Col Jos de los Piedras stationed in Nac begins marching to assist Bradburn in Anahuac He fears that he is outnumbered by the Anglo colonists whom he meets in Liberty Piedras scared because he s vastly outnumbered agrees to Anglo command which is to remove Bradburn from command at Anahuac and to release Travis and Jack He then turns around and begins to march back to Nac This is a victory for the colonists This creates overconfidence Bradburn and Piedras both had Centralist views but Piedras was scared so he threw his buddies under the bus The Anglo men who were sent to secure cannons the rebels John Austin was leading the men sent to collect the cannon Returning to Anahuac he decides to move the cannon by water They re stopped by the Mexican Commander Domingo de Ugartechea at Valesco Fighting breaks out killing a couple people The post at Velasco finally surrenders so they get the Mexicans to surrender A victory that again causes over confidence Piedras gets back to Nacogdoches and there is another bloody battle between the Mexican troops and insurgents He orders all arms to be turned in The Anglos organized resistance asked Piedras to rescind the order and declare their support for Santa Anna He refuses of course to take back the order or call for Santa Anna so fighting begins Anglos attack Mexican forces forcing them to evacuate Nacogdoches Piedras surrenders ANOTHER VICTORY WHOO fed their over confidence even more Now these Anglo s have gotten rid of all Mexican troops in Texas except for those remaining in San Antonio and Goliad They re acting under the name of Santa Anna The Federalist General Jose Antonio Mex a arrives and is accompanied by Stephen Austin They arrive in Brazoria and the colonists throw them an extravagant ball and offer him a warm welcome again proclaiming strong loyalty to Santa Anna and the Federalists Turmoil in Texas What is Stephen Austin up to Remember he was arguing for mediation o The Convention of October is
