Convention of October 1832 o Austin presiding o 55 delegates attended from every community except San Antonio and Victoria Agree to petition the Mexican government Wanted to repeal anti immigration regulations Wanted to continue tax exemptions Wanted land for schools o Lessons in both English and Spanish Wanted the appointment of a commissioner in East Texas who was closer to their settlements who could issue land titles Wanted separate statehood for Texas o A request for separation from Coahuila not a call for independence Wanted to take a pledge of loyalty to the Mexican republic There was a plan for organizing committees of correspondence o Responsible for vigilance and safety o Included the creation of a militia For reasons unclear to historians this petition was never put forward o Convention was a call for a second convention in 1833 In 1833 they drew up the very same list as above The Convention of April 1833 o New convention William Wharton to preside o Restates petitions of 1832 o Austin goes to Mexico City to personally present the petition and arrives July 1833 Austin and the National Scene 1833 1834 o When Austin arrived Santa Anna was out of town so he left everything in the hands of his Vice President Gomez Farias Historians think that at this time Santa Anna was on the fence about everything trying to decide if he was going to jump ship o Gomez Farias Repeals the 1830 prohibition of U S immigration Grants religious toleration Creates a new court system including trial by jury English is now recognized for official purposes They did not obtain agreement to separate Texas from Coahuila o Austin returned home reasonably satisfied with his work Heads back in December of 1833 Arrested in January of 1834 in Saltillo by the Mexican authorities for trying to create rebellion Taken back to Mexico City and imprisoned Shifts from prison to prison until December of 1834 when he gets bond to be released under the condition that he stays in Mexico City No charges were made against him He eventually gets back to Texas in August of 1835 October 30 1833 got in trouble because he wrote a letter to San Antonio o Concluded it with Dios y Tejas God and Texas when the normal closing is Dios y Libertad God and Liberty The New Centralist Santa Anna April 1835 o Complete turnaround from Federalist to Centralist Anglos in Texas supported Federalists o Ousts Farias from his position o Dissolves Federalist Congress o Crushes Federalist opposition in Zacatecas o Santa Anna puts Texas on his to do list o Series of new disturbances at Anahuac involving Tenorio Briscoe and Travis Santa Anna will try and force a collection of taxes in Texas and he will send a small dispatch of soldiers under Captain Tenorio to Anahuac to reestablish the custom house and collect taxes Local residents did not like this Tenorio reports to General Martin Cos in San Antonio that he thinks there s going to be a revolt in Anahuac o The residents are not prepared to pay their taxes o The Anglos are on the edge of revolt Tensions are high at Anahuac Andrew Briscoe decides to play a prank o Loads bricks onto a ship that rose suspicions of smuggled goods Tenorio was not amused and arrests Briscoe Travis was staying in San Felipe o Hears of Briscoe s arrest o Gets 25 50 men and they head for Anahuac o Forces Tenorio to surrender and Briscoe to be freed Texas victory Word falls back to the commander in San Antonio o Under General Martin Cos Violence Confusion and Consultation Begins 1835 o Troops from Anahuac falls back to San Antonio o General Cos says to go arrest the troublemakers o Texas responds to the order by organizing a new political convention o Stephen Austin arrives back in Texas in the Fall of 1835 Confirms the need for organization Santa Anna had Texas on his to do list o Santa Anna also warns that no quarter is to be given No prisoners are to be taken Rebels are to be dealt with as traitors and executed The Texas Revolution Early Stages o October 28 October 10 October 2 of 1835 Battles in Texas o Battle of Gonzalez October 2 1835 Gonzalez held the cannon that had been buried It was unburied and Mexico wanted the return of the cannon Francisco Castaneda was sent to recall the cannon Settlers refused to give up the cannon making the flag that says Come and Take it Leader of the Anglos is John Moore He had about 160 men and the Mexicans had about 100 troops o Skirmishes break out Castaneda found himself outnumbered and outgunned and ordered them to fall back to San Bexar Texas victory again building into this overconfidence Historians call this the first battle of the Texas Revolution o Battle of Goliad October 10 1835 Have an arsenal at Goliad Under the command of George Collinsworth and Ben Milam they tell the Anglos want the gunpowder and weapons guards at the arsenal to hand over the weapons and gunpowder There are three Mexican troops killed and one Anglo killed Samuel McCullough a free black is injured Texas victory again o Battle of Conception October 28 1835 Leads to the fall of San Antonio Concepcion lies between San Antonio and the Mexican border Cut off supply lines to San Antonio Want to isolate the garrison at San Antonio Raises an army of volunteers led by Edward Burleson Burleson was talking about lifting the siege of San Antonio and going into winter quarters Had about 500 volunteers with him who were surrounding the city We left Ben Milam at Goliad He argues to try and take San Antonio 300 men follow Ben Milam into the city Battle begins the dawn of October 5 1835 Milam s attackers kill about 150 Mexican troops Milam himself is killed by sniper fire Anglos take San Antonio General Cos can either surrender or take a stand in the Alamo Cos decides to surrender and negotiate the best deal possible with the Anglos Anglos take San Antonio accept Cos s surrender and allow the Mexican troops to keep their weapons and return to Mexico Texas victory Convention is held o Divided into two factions The war faction Headed by Henry Smith Wanted to declare immediate independence from Mexico The peace faction Headed by Branch T Archer and Stephen Austin Feel like independence is premature and just want separate statehood o At this point in time November of 1835 the peace faction will win o No Declaration of Independence at
