LINGUIS 100 1st Edition Lecture 20Speech ChangePeople can alter the way they talk depending on the social situation they are in-If you are with someone in a different social setting for the first time and you have neverheard them talk in that certain way, then you are experiencing a different register that that person has never used with you or in front of you before-People saying that Scott Walker is changing he speech to sound more like the Americanpolitician rather than that of someone from WisconsinStigmatized language- speech that has a certain perception from the public- positive or negative, overt prestige or covert prestigea. overt prestige- identify with more prestigious groupsb. covert prestige- identify with the stigmatized groupFor linguists there is no such thing as bad grammar for someone who speaks their native language. It is their dialect, and this produces discrimination in education when school districts do not recognize specific dialects as equal to others.a. people you deal with in everyday life will treat you differently based on the way they perceive whatever dialect you are usingi. E.g. an African American speaking in their native dialect asking for an apartment might get turned down, if they use this before a different dialect that they are not used toSocial Dialecta. Dialect that is used by different gender, classes, ethnicities, and other factors that separate societyb. social style- a social feature of language use i. the distinction here is most obvious between formal and informal or casual uses of language ii. style-shifting happens often and is thought to be the incident where an individual switches styles 1. Studies have been done on this to manipulate someone into answering a certain way so that linguists can collect data, and make observations about how one forms their speech in certain situations and how it differs and varies iii. Divergence- types of speech that indicate someone’s role in a position as differing from someone else1. For example, teacher to student, professor to dean, employee to boss, etc. These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.iv. Vernacular is usually referred to when speaking of a group of lower status and directly connects to the dialect of a group 1. There are marked differences in the “standard language” 2. These can vary across ethnic groups and particularly labeled in America; here are some of them a. African American English Vernacularb. Chicano Englishc. Asian American English
