L2 could also be your third or fourth or fifth language. L2 just refers to any other language you learn after your primary oneb. Second Language Acquisition- how adult speakers learn foreign languages c. What we will talk about Acquisition mainly in how kids learn to speak and now SLA (seenabove) in how you learn a second language2. How do kids learn language?a. Any child born anywhere can learn the language of that land, as long as you are exposed to itb. How much influence do other people? You must interact with other people who already speak it to learn it, but we do not mimic exactly what we hear. However we do know that they do repeat something’s word for word like curse words.3. Revolutionizing linguisticsa. Children learning languages are born with universal grammar and enable them to avoid making grammatical errors i. Kids do make certain errors with their pronunciation or singular to plural or other factors of a language, but they are not random. The would not make an error with the order of the words or the syntax, which tells us that there is something we are born with that triggers the pattern of language in our brain. ii. How do we look at or learn everything else? Is it the same as this theory. This is where the theory is criticized. iii. If you are not exposed to every part of a language, you are still able to form and learn basic language. We know this because it is infinitely possible to come up with different sentence after different sentence after different sentence.b. Kids make systematic error. They are not random.i. They have a rule and apply it to everything, not knowing the exceptions of the language and irregularityThese notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture.
