LINGUIS 100 1st Edition Lecture 20 Speech Change People can alter the way they talk depending on the social situation they are in If you are with someone in a different social setting for the first time and you have never heard them talk in that certain way then you are experiencing a different register that that person has never used with you or in front of you before People saying that Scott Walker is changing he speech to sound more like the American politician rather than that of someone from Wisconsin Stigmatized language speech that has a certain perception from the public positive or negative overt prestige or covert prestige a overt prestige identify with more prestigious groups b covert prestige identify with the stigmatized group For linguists there is no such thing as bad grammar for someone who speaks their native language It is their dialect and this produces discrimination in education when school districts do not recognize specific dialects as equal to others a people you deal with in everyday life will treat you differently based on the way they perceive whatever dialect you are using i E g an African American speaking in their native dialect asking for an apartment might get turned down if they use this before a different dialect that they are not used to Social Dialect a Dialect that is used by different gender classes ethnicities and other factors that separate society b social style a social feature of language use i the distinction here is most obvious between formal and informal or casual uses of language ii style shifting happens often and is thought to be the incident where an individual switches styles 1 Studies have been done on this to manipulate someone into answering a certain way so that linguists can collect data and make observations about how one forms their speech in certain situations and how it differs and varies iii Divergence types of speech that indicate someone s role in a position as differing from someone else 1 For example teacher to student professor to dean employee to boss etc These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor s lecture GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes not as a substitute iv Vernacular is usually referred to when speaking of a group of lower status and directly connects to the dialect of a group 1 There are marked differences in the standard language 2 These can vary across ethnic groups and particularly labeled in America here are some of them a African American English Vernacular b Chicano English c Asian American English gr
