Generational AlliancesA. Alliance: Linkages and boundaries in between subsystems - Cooperating in an alliance with another person changes what boundaries are in place B. Cross Generational Alliance: Linkages and boundaries between people that are UNHEALTHYEx. A mother in alliance with her daughter but excluding her husband and son; this is unhealthy for the dynamic of the family as she is showing partiality to one member that she should not be showing it to.-There should, however, be an alliance between Mom and DadC. Generational Alliance Principle- Clearly defined generational boundaries are aiding to generational processes- Cross generational alliances may cause problemsIII. Generational Transmission- Ways of living are transmitted down to the next generation. Ex. Ways of loving, ways of managing relationships, etc.- Characteristics in the family are more likely to influence family members than characteristics in the public- Values and attitudes are passed downIV. Research- Couples who get married that have parents who have been divorced are more likely to get divorcedthemselves- When the parents of both couples have gotten a divorce, they child is at a high-risk for divorce too- Both abusive and non-abusive behaviors are seen across generations. Ex. Drug addiction or kindness V. Transitional CharacterA. A transitional character is a person who alters the generational processes of their family- This can be for good, or for bad. *Can change behavior from dysfunctional to functional, or functionalto dysfunctionalB. How to become a transitional character- Decide to change the processes of your family- Look for strengths in the family and not just weaknesses- Then decide what you want to remain, adjust, get rid off or create- Be deliberate- Take into account family rituals- Emotionally distance yourself: See your parents as people who have faults and strengths rather thanjust mom and dad.- Marry later (more independent and ready)- Read up on books that deal with this topic- Join organizations to meet new people are build healthy relationships- Get an education- Develop a positive way of lifeC. Emotional cut-offs (or disconnecting ties to your family) does not work because the person is still influencingyour behaviorCan create an emotional vacuum: afraid to open up or start unhealthy
