Comparative Research- Comparative research is useful to observe something seemingly invisible; culture. Comparative research allows you to see similarities and differences between cultures.3 types of Comparative Research:1. Cross Cultural2. Cross Societal3. Cross NationalA. Cross Cultural- Most frequently used- Valuable when studying small, similar populations- Also called ethnographic (Ethno=people, graphic=writing). Ethnographies are “people writings”- Is done through Direct Observation- Can be traced back to the 1800’s. Some cultures that were studied back then do not exist anymore. Thisreveals how important it is to document culture that may be extinct in the future.B. Cross Societal- Collects data based on descriptive statistics of populations- Is Nomothetic, NOT Idiographic; Only groups can be studied and not individuals- Is used to study numerous areas of family trendsC. Cross National- Studies two or more societies in order to obtain comparable data on each. It can be done by studying one society at a time, or one after the other- Looking at the issues of individuals in each society- It is considered the MOST impactful/powerful because you can gather information on both the individual and societal level!- However, it is the hardest type of research to conduct and it is the most costly- This leads to fewer studies doneComparative Research is…- Only useful if it is based off of theory. This is true because theories predict, and you need to have an idea of what you are trying to find.- The only way to see differences in societies and discover how societies affect
