FAS 370 1st Edition Lecture 1 Outline of Current Lecture I. Functions of the FamilyA. Look at the 6 Central Functions of the FamilyCurent LectureThe Different Functions of FamilyFamily functions:Sexual Intimacy- Our families inform us of who we can and cannot have sex with. We cannot have sex with anyone in our families, only people outside of the family.- Sex before marriage is frowned upon for teenagers, but not for adults.- The connection between family and sexuality has been lost. On the good side, we know the difference between right and wrong; such as, a man cannot rape his wife. However, on the bad side, unmarried couples are having children. An increasing number of children are being raised in unstable and disconnected families. Also, there are more venereal diseases present than have been in the past. Procreation/Reproduction- The role of parents is critical because children are incapable of raising themselves. Theycannot provide food, shelter, clothing and other basic needs on their own.Economic Cooperation- Families are responsible for providing economic care. Parents cannot provide for theirchild without having the finances to take care of the child’s needs. This goes beyond justchildren; when elderly family members can no longer work, they may need financial orpersonal contribution to help them during that time.Socialization of Children- Socialization is the development of discovering who a person is in relation to theirsociety or a specific group. Children are finding out their place in this big world with thehelp of the conscious and subconscious information around them.Emotional Needs- Affection is an essential function in families. Affection is linked to satisfaction, andconveys feelings of liking and love. This is especially true of infants; infants will diewithout touch despite fulfilling their nutritional needs.Status (Ascribed/Achieved)- Ascribed status refers to the status you are born into (high/low), whereas achievedstatus is something you build during the course of your life. Status can impact the wayyou are treated, how you treat others, and how you are seen in the society you live
