Week 4 Discussion Question 1 Researchers have shown that subliminal persuasion doesn t work yet some critics insist that the constant barrage of regular advertising keeps certain brand names in the consumer s mind making it seem natural to subconsciously reach for that brand on the store shelf Do you agree that this could be considered a form of subliminal advertising Why or why not I agree based on my experience whenever I m in the store Whenever I pass by the laundry section to get some laundry detergents stack of different brands lay in front of me and usually the ones which I normally watched or heard in the advertisement will come into my mind and eventually I will choose it As an example one advertisement can play into your mind repeatedly like Sometimes you fell like a nut sometimes you don t According to an article in Time Magazine 2010 one study supporting subliminal messaging Custer shows that subliminal advertising techniques which is banned from other countries can be helpful But he stresses that people that are worried about being involuntarily controlled should fear commercials that are visible to them rather than those that are not Many soda advertisements by example display the drink with positive outcomes like friends or beaches If you are showed by these commercials repeatedly it does create an organization in your mind and without knowing it is possible that you will choose to want a Coke he stresses References Harrell E 2010 July 2 Think You re Operating on Free Will Think Again Time Retrieved from http www time com time health article 0 8599 2000994 00 html xid rss topstories
