Week 4 DQ4 What are some of the advantages and disadvantages of the various media for advertising How do advertisers influence the editorial content of the media in which their ads appear Various media for advertising have many advantages and disadvantages For example newspapers have a peculiar benefit in its distribution locally This enables the advertiser and manufacturers to sell their products that are accessible in that area Also the advertisers can give away discounts and special coupons that customers can easily acquire in their local stores and markets One disadvantage of newspapers is that its design is not attractive Its advertising is incomplete and not noticeable unlike in the magazines and mailers On the other hand television has bizarre advantage since it utilizes sight and sounds in advertising Although it can be considered as the most effective way of advertising it is too much expensive and cumbersome Rodman 2010 In addition radio is also a useful means of advertising presently Every radio channel has its own theme or subject matter and advertisers use this for target marketing The downside of radio advertisements is it interrupts the person s listening pleasure which is annoying so listeners often transfer through different channels until they are satisfied Lastly due to technological advancement internet has also become one of the means for advertising which is much more inexpensive than the aforementioned media Advertisers and promoters control media content in two ways by product placement and economic clout Rodman 2010 They are always finding ways on how to put their products in the line of sight of the consumers It is noticeably shown that advertisements in television or movie often display a product that is placed in the hands of the endorser or used as prop in automobiles Even in several news programs for example the TODAY show one will notice in fashion section that designer or the company will use and refer their products Advertising is a vast business and each kind of media depends on the income that they gain from advertising in order to survive Advertiser who dissent to the content that is being provided can endanger the advertising and the money in connection with it Rodman G R 2010 Mass media in a changing world History industry controversy 3rd ed Boston MA McGraw Hill
