Week 5 DQ 1 When and why did people become concerned about the effects of media When did systematic research into media effects begin People started to be concerned with the effects of media starting way back middle ages Rodman 2010 It was a concern for the church elders at that time as to how it affects religious scriptures like the Bible which made it available to the public It became a threat to the sacredness by being made available to everyone IT is of the opinion of the lay persons that upon making it available to all and that they can reach God by themselves and by accessing such available resources the public would lose the faith with the church Another instance was in the 20th century wherein the World War I occurred At that time the enemies as well as the allies used media in giving their propaganda and in turn getting different viewpoints The public were worried that such a way would result help brainwash them When the Payne Studies started in 1929 wherein media tried to be systematic Its primary goal is to regulate what was shown in movies and its effects to the young audiences There came concern coming from what can be portrayed by those in the movie which may be wrongly followed by the youth Such a study is concerned in the technical aspect using laboratory experiments with the help of variables and controls as well as the content analysis Rodman 2010 Rodman G R 2010 Mass media in a changing world History industry controversy 3rd ed Boston MA McGraw Hill
