European nations the United States and Japan in this time period which we have been discussing The goal of imperialism is for these nations to spread their influence to other places in the world as much as possible Three main ways in which these nations act as imperialists The military wars fighting violence economics money business resources and diplomacy sit down talk to our way of getting something done 1 Markets Military economics and diplomacy are ways to corner The needs for markets is what s driving these imperialists actions They have the stuff they just need people to sell it to 2 European Competition in the mid 1800s European nations are hitting up these markets and on the verge of fighting each other In 1884 European nations are going to meet in the city of berlin to see what they should do about Africa call this the Berlin conference Start divvying these areas up and at the end Ethiopia is left independent of European control There s a place that is not invited to this conference therefore left out of the spoils of Africa that being the United States Europe looks at US as weak not going to shoot them The US has no market present in Africa This makes the United States a little nervous because the European wealth is going to expand Made the African work and if they did not work and if they didn t fast enough limbs would get cut off 3 Morality the justification rationalization excuse for the imperializing countries to explain their actions to themselves and to the rest of the world These places US European nations Japan feel justified about their actions is they are bringing civilizations to these parts of the world and all the benefits that come with it They say they are bringing democracy to these people as well as religion education Rudyard Kipling wrote a poem called The White Man s Burden this way of thinking drives the actions of the US for a long time Impacts a bunch of people around the world Morality is basically saying what they re doing it okay because they are doing it for the world II Early Entry into Imperialism 1 Manifest Destiny the process of 200 years of getting coast to coast and making the states was the late 1800s they think the process would be better if they owned Hawaii In 1893 American business men living there organized an overthrow of the queen of Hawaii They create a provisional government and what they tell everyone is they got rid of the queen to bring them a democracy What they really want to do is turn it into property of US The people of Hawaii start to write petitions they had 20 000 signatures saying they don t want to be part of the United States In 1898 they said too bad you re part of it now US marines were sent to Hawaii to help out with this process The queen gave up but recognized thousands of Hawaiians would die if she did not do that III The Spanish American War 1 Sinking of the Maine American business men have been growing sugar in Cuba Spain is perfectly content in letting them grow sugar in Cuba In 1898 the fighting between Cuban and Spain intensifies and the American business mean are nervous Naval Ships will go down to Cuba to protect the American business men and their sugar One of the ships sitting in the harbor is the USS Maine On February 15 1898 Maine explodes sinks into the harbor with a crew of 350 80 percent of crew dies The suspects of who did it was Cuba and Spain The Spanish are suspects because they saw it as protection of Cuba we are on their turf Cuba is a suspect because they want help and could blame it on Spain to get that The United States actually accidently did it themselves from the bombs they were carrying They decide to blame Spain because if they get Spain out of the way they have more influence on Cuba potentially better sugar deals Another reason if they beat them it makes them look more powerful to the rest of the world Going to war with Spain pleased a lot of Americans because they looked a little bad ass Need to prove they can win against one of the big boys Now they are at way at this is a game changer 2 Cuba 90 percent of this war is fought in Cuba The US has a navy that Spain does not They are able to blockade surrounding around the Cuban island to get the Spanish troops from getting reinforcement 17 000 Americans will head to Cuba to fight against the Spanish They go and 2000 die of disease and 300 die in battle 6 months later the war is over Begins in February of 1898 ends in July With the support of the US Cuba has a chance to win America wins the Spanish American war When the win they get gifts prizes the prize takes us to China 3 Treaty of Paris 1898 Officially ends Spanish American war Covers three main points 1 the issue of Cuba They officially gain their independence BUT neither Spain nor US felt they were ready to be independent They were officially independent but the United States will run it sort of like a babysitter 2 the United States won so they get some prizes They get a handful of islands in the pacific and Atlantic that used to belong to Spain Guam and Puerto Rico are officially territories of the United States Puerto Rico is taxed but has no right to vote 3 The Philippians gets us closer to China but Spain owns it Some of the Spanish is stationed in Philippians and the US sends a few ships there While the treaty of Paris is being negotiated the United States fights a battle against the Spanish in the Philippines in Manila The United States wins The United States is going to have to fork over cash for the Philippines The United States will give
