8 America After the Great War aka world war 1 Key Terms Veteran s Day The Lost Generation Scopes Trial Harlem Renaissance Dawes Plan I Remembering the War 1 American Legion organization club created by World War 1 vets immediately after the war The purpose and goal was to provide support for the troops now the war was over and they were heading back up Troops faced issues such as mentality from losing limbs PTSD shell shock losing guys they fought alongside with killing another human being etc The soldiers needed to work to support each other because federal government is not going to do anything The U S had never fought anything like this so government didn t know what they were supposed to do So this legion helped vets get better education reintegrate into communities support groups and also instrumental in fighting for vets on behalf to United States government As US keeps moving forward these issues continue for vets 2 Veteran s Day Every November 11th Veterans Day is celebrated when the armistice happened On November 11th 1919 Wilson said let s start treating this day as a day of remembrance calling it Remembrance Day to remember World War 1 To set this day aside as a day of remembrance it was vitally important to not forget what had just happened In 1938 congress passes law to make this a federal legal holiday November 11th 1938 first legal Remembrance Day In 1954 name becomes Veteran s Day Between 1938 and 1954 World War 2 occurs killing 60 million people When World War 2 ended WW2 vets advocated to make this a day for all vets What this day no longer is about just World War 1 The remembrance of WW1 gets pushes aside so it is seen as less important For the people who fought and lived it was incredibly significant As things move forward things change in how it is remembered The only things connected to WW1 now is the date You lose a little context importance for WW1 Significance tell us that Veteran s Day was first about World War 1 created specifically for WW1 and wanted to recognize that Since then Americans have pushed away WW1 aspect and to make it about other things that have happened in US history 3 Tomb of the Unknown Soldier Arlington National Cemetery created during Civil War as burial place for soldiers After WW1 a lot of soldiers died anonymously without having identity confirmed simply killed in such horrid ways they could not be identified by physical features typically buried in France named as Unknown Soldier In order to give them credit all the places faugh in war created a tomb of the Unknown Soldier placed in Arlington in 1922 We dug up body in France that was American shipped him to Virginia and buried him in this tomb In front of tomb every hour there is a changing of the guards A lot of importance placed in guarding this soldier The idea of this first came about during WW1 now it s about all unknown soldiers The tomb was meant to honor WW1 but now there is no official WW1 memorial It deeply mattered to those who lived it II Cultural Upheaval 1 The Lost Generation Refers to young Americans who lived through and experienced in a variety of ways WW1 Can mean as soldiers family members of soldiers people who watched as friends and loved ones killed etc Europeans as well Very much characterized by fact they have questions not necessarily new questions Asking is what we are doing really the right thing to do Is how we think the right way to think Do we have all the answers Do we have any answers Who am I The answers to these questions are often looked to be answered by family religion country These could be TRADITIONAL places to find answers Prior to WW1 many people found their answers in those people After ww1 the answers do not fit This lost generation is now asking old questions but seeking new answers Thinking science and psychology now have the answers After WW1 the family has been broken from wounded and dead soldiers so the traditional structure of the family been thrown out the window new answered are needed The fact that the family traditions is thrown out the window is liked by the new generation This generation is going to try and push the boundaries because they aren t satisfied with it s always been done this way Their thinking is going to be shown through literature music basically everywhere 2 Prohibition During progressive era some states pass laws banning alcohol but in 1919 the 18th amendment to constitution is passed to prohibit manufacturing and selling of alcohol nationwide The goal prohibitionist had it doing this the morality of the nation would improve traditional way or thinking Home manufacturing of alcohol and organized crime goes up during this time period Gangsters are controlling alcohol being manufactured or brought in is causing a lot of crime Now that crime violence is going up more law enforcement is needed to deal with this The law enforcement can be bribed by alcohol so nothing is really getting better Tradition has kind of won because amendment was passed but by the time 1933 rolls around everyone has had enough The 21st amendment is passed to get rid of the 18th amendment which makes alcohol legal nationwide again Alcohol is made legal again during great depression because money is needed 18th amendment no alcohol 21st amendment allows alcohol 3 Scopes Trial Issue of religion and education By this point in American history early 1900 s a newer and more strand of conservatives Christianity has arisen in the US They are uncomfortable with modern discussion of the world 1924 in Dayton Tennessee the state of Tennessee s government passes a law prohibiting the teaching of evolution in public schools Very quickly this law gains a lot of national attention new organization called the American Civil Liberties Union ACLU wants to test this law figures Bill of rights is important and very first thing talks about freedom of religion ACLU is looking to take this law to Supreme Court so looking for someone to get arrested for teaching evolution John Scopes is a high school teacher in Dayton Scopes agrees to publicly teach evolution He gets arrested his lawyer is Clearance Darrow William Jennings Bryan is the lawyer for Tennessee These lawyers were already nationally known names meaning this is going to be a very famous trial Center stage of duking out traditional vs modern At end of trial Scopes is found guilty They appeal and they take this appeal to the Tennessee State Supreme Court The Tennessee State Supreme Court hears the
