1 15 15 Reconstruction I 1865 1877 I A Civil War Recap A Secession U S has just finished Civil War Reconstruction is the process of rebuilding the country Key Terms Secession Special Field Order 15 Freedman s Bureau Radical Republicans 1 November 1860 Lincoln wins presidential election a 10 southern states didn t put Lincolns name on the ballot 1 Feared Lincoln would end slavery a Never said he would abolish slavery before he became president Said it was not the job of the President to end slavery b Belongs to Republican party which wants to end slavery 2 December 20th 1860 South Carolina votes to officially remove itself from the U S 3 Between Dec 1860 and Feb 1861 six more southern states Secede a Florida Georgia Alabama Mississippi Louisiana Texas b Form the Confederate States of America 4 Fort Sumter South Carolina a April 1861 shots are fired by Confederates over this fort Begins the War b Brings four more states into Confederacy 1 Virginia North Carolina Tennessee Arkansas 5 Secession starts the Civil War which kills 600 000 people B War Lasted 1861 1865 1 2 Advantages C Emancipation Proclamation a North had railroads transportation population money factories b South had home field advantage tactics and generals 1 Abraham uses it as intimidation tool in the South and rallying tool in the North 2 Does NOT free slaves D Surrender and Lincoln s Assassination 1 April 9th 1865 war officially ends 2 April 15th 1865 Lincoln is shot at Ford s theater 3 Andrew Johnson from Tennessee now becomes president II The End of Slavery What is Freedom A The Thirteenth Amendment 1 January 1865 ends slavery a South isn t technically in the Union when they rejoin they must agree to it 2 Special Field Order 15 a Feb 1865 b Temporary military order issued by William Sherman to address the problem of what to do with newly freed slaves 1 Asked newly freed slaves what they wanted c Breaks up confiscated white plantations and farms and split it up into 40 acre plots and gives each family a mule d Dismantled when war ends and Johnson voids it B Sharecropping 1 Rent the land from the owner and you pay them in crops rather than money 2 Half of the crop goes to the landowner 3 When emergencies happen employers supply things to the workers and the workers need to pay back the owners III Johnson vs Radical Republicans A Johnson s Plan form 1 Wanted the South to come back and wanted everyone to move on in a painless 2 Pardoned everyone as long as they took a loyalty oath a Gave land back to all white landowners from before the war b Gave back right to vote to all white landowners 3 If you are a state that seceded you have to write a new constitution a Doesn t want white southerners to get mad 4 Freedman s Bureau a Goal was to create a federal agency to go into the south and address all of the problems of the newly freed slaves 1 Wanted it to last for one year 2 Employed less than 500 people for this government agency Started schools and hospitals b c Ensured that blacks had fair treatment in the courts d Offers financial assistance for those who are old or too sick to work B Radical Republicans Extended Freedman s bureau to 1870 1 2 Added time money and manpower to the freedman s bureau
