Soviet Union Japan which has been fought over by all three countries When WWII ends in 1945 there are two armies occupying Korea Soviet Union and Untied States Korea would like to be independent The United Nations get to pick who gets it so Korea ends up getting cut in half between US and Soviet Union Korea now becomes two countries North Korea communists because occupied by Soviets and South Korea occupied by U S Everybody is happy except Korea Koreans have not had a say so in this matter 2 War in Korea The war kicks off in 1950 the leader of North Korea 5 years of this they are done They shouldn t be two but one So leader of North invades South Korea in summer of 1950 The Soviet Union had no idea this was going to happen because United States will be pissed Goal is to create one communist Korea By September of 1950 all that is left is a little chunk of South Korea The rest North Korea has This was definitely a surprise South Korea goes to the United Nations The UN decides to use force to help South Korea get their country back UN sends an army Their army are comprised of countries making up the UN 90 percent of the troops sent are American North Korea knows where they are going to land so instead UN changes their point to land UN troops coming to help South Korea land in Sole In two months they push North Koreans troops back to North Korea to point where they are almost in China Now South Korea is in control of North Korea North Korea is in shit load of trouble Soviet Union wants to stay out offer very little help China is the one to help UN decide to keep invading and go into China MacArthur advocates bombing China so he is fired Chinese troops join war on side of North Korea South Korea and UN versus North Korea and Chinese By summer of 1951 they are back to where they started The troops on both side they come to 38th parallel Keep fighting for 2 more years in same spot 3 38th Parallel original line separating North and South Korea June of 1953 North and South Korea have a time out and talk about ending the war The only thing that has changed is lots of people have died Millions of people have died but we contained communism The war is not over this armistice is still in place no treaty ending this war Today still at war Views are still same This is what cold war looks like III Cuba 1 Cuban Revolution 1906 United States officially hands over running of Cuba to Cubans Between 1906 and 1959 Cubans were running the government but structures changed Sometimes there were 1 president sometimes 5 presidents American businessmen still own sugar plantations there Batista first became pres in 1940 He helps write brand new constitution that everyone likes His term ends in 1944 and goes to live in the US In 1942 decides he wants to be pres again when he goes back to Cuba he isn t doing to good last in the poles In 1952 Batista decides there isn t going to be a election Takes the military to overthrow the government because if he takes democratic route he will lose Grabs the presidency and first thing he does is revokes huge chunks of the constitution because some of the stuff could take him out of presidency He figures out how to make even more money by accepting bribes including some from American businessmen Prostitution is ramped and brothels are sending money to him it becomes easier to get cocaine and becomes a very corrupt place There s drugs prostitution and the mob running all of these while Batista is letting this happen He is completely destroying country In mid to late 1950s Cubans begin organizing to fight back Begin picking up guns and things to make point they don t want him anymore One of the leaders named Fidel Castro Still alive today Trying to get enough guns to retake country from military Military also needs more stuff to keep these people in check go to the United States for resources US government is actually supplying Cuba to suppress their own people People trying to get country back start demonstrations in the speech and start reading about his in newspaper Batista captures them executes and tortures them By December of 1958 the United States decided to officially cut of support no money and guns Without support he knows he is a goner On December 31 1988 is holding a big party and all wealthy and famous are there As soon as party is over clock strikes midnight he heads to the airport because if he stays he will get captured by rebels and ultimately killed Jumps into plane with millions of dollars that he got and heads to Portugal Lives out rest of his life for 25 years Moral of the story a corrupt Cuban dictator Batista s outs and the revolution brings in rebels led by Castro January 1 1989 Cuba is under Castro s rule He decides democratic capitalism is looking iffy He is going to begin implementing communism Wants to take the sugar money American business men are taking money for and spread it around the people He uses force to take over the sugar plantations called nationalization he is able to get a lot of sugar plantations and devys it up People are getting checks from this and some money is used for free public health care free education which sounds awesome Cuba says communism is great United States doesn t like this The president Eisenhower directs the CIA to come up with a plan to get rid of Castro If we get rid of Castro we can get Cuba to come back to democratic capitalism Eisenhower gets plan kicked into motion and trying to figure out how they actually do this Before Castro brings
