10 World War II 1939 1945 Key Terms Pearl Harbor Internment Camps A Philip Randolph The Holocaust Decision Time By time WWII ends the U S has new approach on how things will be moving forward Much bigger influence than it ever has before I Build Up to War 1 Crisis in Europe In Europe WWI has happened everyone was hurt by Great Depression and Europe was hurt even more because their economy was not great coming out of it Devastated by WWI and ripple effects of great depression Germany who was hurt the hardest Beginning of 1930 s Germany was in a bad place the value of their currency a wheel barrow of money wouldn t even buy a loaf of bread They are looking for hope and answers The ideology is fascism the reason Hitler gets power is because fascism sounds attractive to people Comes to power 90 percent legitimately Basically Hitler is democratically elected power of Germany based on ideology of fascism FASCISM IS NOT COMMUNISM YOU CANNOT BE A FASCIST COMMUNIST Because you want fundamentally different things A communist goal equal financial status for all discourage things like religion doesn t matter what nation you belong to or your ethnicity equality for all comes first economic engine driving all of this Fascism goal the nation comes first and a nation should be number one the best and greatest in the world number one in your life This group identifies what nation should look like based on ethnic religious economic characteristics You as an individual is not as important as the nation Anything about you is second to that of a nation Violence can be used to accomplish it actually helpful proves you are strong and number one If there are people who do not meet these characteristics you can confiscate their property are not part of the nation Get rid of them This promotes the idea that they can be great if they fix these things and get the bad things out their nation should rise again and have more power Germany tries taking other nations but the rest of Europe is upset The treaty of Versailles say they are not supposed to be invading other countries Europe doesn t stop them though because they are scared of having to go to war They get to keep what they took but are not allowed to go to Poland because getting closer to Soviet Union In 1979 September 1st Germany invades Poland Start of WWII in Europe but not actual start 2 Crisis in Asia japan wanted to be the power in Asia problem is China has been in power but they have had problems of their own Japan tries taking over the turf Japan is willing to fight in order to acquire territory Demonstrate this in beginning of 1900s In 1937 Japan invades China Now the United States has an opinion on this There are markets in China and we want them so we help China Give Japan a punishment we won t sell them oil embargo This is a problem for Japan because as imperialist they have a lot of industrialization all of these things need oil to run which they don t have So we were prime suppliers Japan can get it from other places but not as good and expensive This makes Japan take notice They are upset with United States which builds as they take more and more turf In return they punish us 3 Pearl Harbor December 7th 1941 the United States naval base of Pearl Harbor in Honolulu Hawaii was bombed by Japanese air force killing 200 403 military personal and 68 civilians All of big battle ships air craft carriers were sunk In response we go to war with Japan taking us into Europe because Germany places war on us Officially in WWII II War at Home 1 Internment Camps The majority of Japanese Americans lived on west coast closer to Japan FDR placed an executive order doesn t need congressional approval and is number 9066 This order was issued in February of 1942 When this order is passed it called for the removal of 130 000 Japanese Americans from their homes schools business etc to be placed in internment camps in dessert region of California Arizona What s forbidden to take with them is any Japanese artifacts cameras Kicked out of their house packing up belongings and taken to Santa Anita Racetrack to sort out all of these people while these camps are being built The people are being put in stalls Military with guns are also there These people have tags with numbers identifying them when they did not even do anything Didn t break any laws Houses and business were sold Some Japanese Americans went to court over this some of these cases made it so Supreme Court but said it was totally legal for defense of our nation Important distinction they did not murder them Rights of individuals were second to nation Allowed to leave after war was over in 1945 This becomes an unaddressed issue for decades Wasn t until 1970 they discussed what happened Brought so much attention that in 1988 the United States congress passed a law that officially apologized for internment camps meaning they were wrong and provided financial compensation reparations for any survivor 20 000 dollars was given to them in 1988 The number of remaining survivors was about 60 000 Obviously impacts the Japanese Americans lives and tells us our nation limited individual s rights If it happens once it could happen again the rights of citizens become secondary to nation These points continue to have influence today 2 Rosie the Riveter women are treated somewhat similar in how AA were treated in WWI workwise In this case government is looking to women to fill labor gap during WWII This is interesting because even if woman were in workplace usually they would do domestic work cooks maids nanny nurses woman s work These kinds of jobs are appropriate because they aren t as education not as much physical labor All of a sudden building airplanes becomes their work US has to convince woman this is what they should be doing now Woman now need to work so you can support your husband father sons brothers and the nation Some jump in for money and some need more convincing We have to convince woman going into work force this particular way won t hurt them won t lose that womaness in doing men s work To rally around this concept government makes up Rosie the Riveter Norman Rockwell was the artists that creates image of American from 1920 s 50 s Rosie the Riveter has interesting characteristics In her lap she holds a rivet gun a sandwich she s hungry because she has been working dirt on her arms and face and she has her goggles on and seems pretty good at her job because of her muscles This Rosie has got a lot of
