One and only one missed test can be made up by taking a closed book (i.e., no cheat sheet) essay test before the next scheduled test. Any test taken early also will be an essay test. You are expected to know material in the texts, whether I go over it in class or not (unless I specifically rule it out). You also are expected to know for the tests any supplementary information presented in class even if it is not in the text. To calculate your grade, I will add the 4 test grades together and divide by 4. Then I will add any extra credit to this final average.I use a 10 point scale to determine letter grades for the final grade in the course. I will NOT be using the plus/minus grading system. You will be allowed to use a HANDWRITTEN “cheat sheet” for all in-class multiple choice tests. Specifically, you will be allowed 1 standard size (8.5” X 11”) sheet of paper, and you may use both sides of it to HAND WRITE notes to use during the test. If you have a printed cheat sheet, you will lose 20 points from your test grade. If you use a cheat sheet, you will put your name on it and turn it in with your test. Write your own cheat sheet; do not collaborate.I will pass around an attendance sheet, but only for record-keeping purposes, as I will not be offering any extra credit for attendance, nor any penalty for lack of attendance. Extra CreditDuring class later in the semester, probably the next-to-last class period, I will give a multiple choice test on the following book: Brain Bugs, by Dean Buonomano. It can be purchased cheaply online. A maximum of 5 points can be added to your final average in the course. If you take the optional test, the amount of extra credit that will be added to your FINAL AVERAGE IN THE COURSE will be as follows: score on test: 50-59 = +1, 60-69 = +2, 70-79 = +3, 80-89 = +4, 90-100 = +5 It is an interesting and informative book. This will be the only form of extra credit in this course.CLASSROOM RULESDon’t engage in private conversations, as you will make it harder for other students to hear lectures.Be aware that disruptive behavior can result in your being removed from the class. If you use a cell phone during a test, I will assume you are cheating and will respond based on that assumption. If you spend class time using an electronic device (cellphone, computer) to do anything other than take notes, then you should just go ahead and skip class, as I am not counting attendanceanyway. If I observe you engaging in non-note- taking behavior with electronic devices during class, I may ask you to leave. If you must pass this class to graduate this semester, what that means to me is that you will not miss class, will read all assignments before they are discussed in class, will spend MANY hours preparing for tests, and will do extra credit. Then you should pass the class. Slacking offand then begging will not be an effective strategy.
