Researchers gathering information door to door in the Mexican/Latino community discovered that contrary to prior beliefs, immigrant Latinos had lowerrates of death, heart disease and other factors and overall were healthier than even the wealthy c. Immigrant Latinos also showed lower rates of psychological illness & cardiovascular disease d. Researchers believe this is in part due to the strong family ties that hold them togethere. Social Isolation rising in the U.S. – we work longer hours, spend 50min-2 hours to commute, 1 in 4 people say they don’t have anyone to discuss important matters with f. Social isolation accelerates aging & is a chronically stressful situationg. Kenneth Square is a part of the town that helps the population. There are many resources that help with a sense of communityh. Town has youth center called “The Garage” i. The gap between wealth and health is large when an immigrant first comes to the U.S., but as they spend more years in the country the gap becomes thinner and thinner.These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. After being in the U.S. for 5 years, Latino immigrants are much more likely to have high blood pressure and more likely to be obesek. Children are having less access to parents, losing social and family ties because parents have to work so muchl. People who have been in the country less than 13 years only had 8% depression rate, however this increases the longer they live in the country and the more they “become American” II. The Latino immigrants bring forms of culturally based connections into the U.S. They basically do the opposite of social isolation, this provides a bugger to help with the stresses they do faceii. Networks/Supportsdecreases stress & buffer/protection for stressorsHealthb. Why does this advantage decline in the next generation?i. Advantage declines as the immigrants become “more American” ii. Working hours become longer, causing less time to be with family/ the networks and connections that decrease stress, less parental time, decrease transmission of culturally based factors, decrease in quality of diet, decreased hopeful outlook iii. Increased stressor  decreased networks/connectionsiv. The more years in the U.A. the more negative effects occurc.
