SOCI 1010 1nd Edition Lecture 25 Outline of Last Lecture I. The Big IdeaII. Parenting Styles & Class ReproductionIII. 10 years later…Outline of Current Lecture I. The Big IdeaII. DesignIII. Why the Differences?IV. ReactionsV. What would she do different?Current LectureI. The Big Idea: Lareau’s follow up study highlights several methodological challengesII. Methodology: Designa. Lareau only interviewed families in her follow up, she did not observe. She interviewed the target person, parents and sometimes siblings. She did not get totalk to teachers/coaches to get an outsiders point of view. She feels that her data is not as accurate because she only has family’s recollection of something.III. Why the Differences?a. Lareau didn’t have the time or resources to conduct observationsb. The amount of paperwork to observe in schools increased drastically and was very time consumingc. Qualitative work affects life more than quantitative workd. Had other obligations/personal life These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.IV. Reactions:a. Complained that their lives were misunderstoodb. Some said there was inaccurate informationc. Complained that researchers perspectives did not portray actual perceptionsd. Stacey & Harold’s families were fine with the booke. The Yanelli’s said they seemed like poor white trash and they seemed like child abusers, they were very upset until someone explained to them why they were portrayed that way and that it wasn’t a personal attackf. The Williams thought the student observers weren’t trained well enoughg. There may had been a misunderstanding of scholarly researchV. What would she do differently if she could go back?a. She would have explained to families that her book would be more analytical andwould have givem them a book to help understand what her book would be likeb. Would have gone back and observed when targets were seniors in high schoolc. Wouldn’t have handed them a book, felt like she pressured them to read
