How does concerted cultivation benefit the middle class?b. What causes differences in parenting styles?c. If a family’s class position changed, would their parenting style change?Current LectureI. “I Need Help!”a. One of Lareau’s students research projectb. Found that children acted differently in the classroom depending on their social classc. Observed classroom behavior or students, looked at how and how often studentsasked for helpd. Results:i. Over the course of 4 hours:1. MC children asked for help an avg of 7.75x2. WC children asked for help an avg of 1.2x3. MC children were more direct, proactive and assertive when asking for help. They were more like to cut in front of people or run up to the teacher.4. WC children raised their hands and waited, even if they got skipped because MC children would cut in front of them, much less assertivee. Middle class children were more likely to ask teachers for help that working class or poor childrenf. Middle class children were more likely to receive helpg. Following up, she found that parents were teaching their children to act these waysThese notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.h. Makes teachers less likely to be able to see who needs help (less time to observe what students in the room are working on/struggling with)II. The Big Idea: Lareau argues that concerted cultivation is a historically specific form of parenting that provides advantages to middle class children a. This parenting strategy is unique to our current generation (was not used with our parents, grandparents, etc.)III. Parenting Style Questions:a. How does concerted cultivation benefit the middle class?i. Beneficial because of how it is structured and what is rewarded, not because it is inherently betterb. What causes these differences in parenting styles?i. Educational institutions require one to be well roundedii. Economic changes 1. Parents want their children to maintain economic statusiii. Tied into what “experts say”iv. Work quality – the way parents see their work, middle class families see childhood as a time to prep for a rewarding job (they feel their own jobs are rewarding) whereas working class families may not see their own jobsas rewarding, therefore they want to give child fun times and happiness while they can still have it (before they have to have a job they are unhappy at)v. Suburbanization- bigger neighborhoods and houses and not as many kids, etcc. If a family’s class position changed, would parenting style change?i. Lareau has evidence saying yes and no1. Yes:a. Concerted cultivation is new to this generation; therefore, as family’s class positions changed, they did adapt this newstyle of parenting and use it on their own children, sometimes grandparents or family members a generation above don’t agree with certain things that are doneb. Lareau shows different lifestyle schedules to different social classes (ex. She showed poor and working class families Alexander Williams schedule) and they reacted negatively, saying he must be a sad exhausted child and that he doesn’t get to have friends or free
