Effects of Self-AwarenessCurrent LectureShame- social emotionAwareness of how short we fall of our potential is unique to humans.Self-Awareness - thinking about yourself – ability to understand we are a distinct person (dolphins and chimpanzees also do this) Babies are not born with self-awareness – are able to recognize they are a being at about 18-month-oldLevels of Self-Awareness: more self-aware while public speaking because all eyes are on us and we are social animals when other people are watching us and we want to know what they see when they see us. - Self-awareness is a state that varies sometimes we are high on it and other times lowSelf-Awareness Effects Positive Emotions (Pride)Self-Awareness Am I being who I want to be?Negative Emotions (Shame, Guilt)Desire to avoid negative emotions- If we are feeling negative emotions we take steps to reduce them These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. The men had egalitarian attitudes (non sexist). Asks the men to read some statements out loud. Statements are recorded. Statements like “The woman’s place is at home” “Women should obey their husbands” the guys don’t want to read them, but do read them out loud anyway. Then they are asked to walk down the hall and wait on a graduate student to come. The researchers recorded what side of the room the men sat on as they waited. 70% of the men sat on the right side of the room. There was a mirror onthat wall, so 70% of sat with their back to the mirror. Avoid their self by sitting with back to mirror. - Control condition: have egalitarian men read statements that are innocuous (neutral)and walk down the hall and sit in the room.
