Research MethodsCurrent LectureWe want to document and understand why people do what they do. - Aggression (observable social behavior)o Why do people display aggression? CausationDeterministic Causation- If A causes B, then a must always be followed by B. - Ex. – Books falling over and knocking a book beside it downProbabilistic Causation- (causation in the social world) A’s occurrence increases the likelihood of B - Ex. - Smoking causes cancer. Not everyone who smokes will get cancer and some people who have not smoked will get cancer.-Never any guarantees. Just trying to find trends.Laws of Human Behavior = Probabilistic Causation Behavior = Probabilistic Causation- We test the physical world as infants and social behaviors tooo Dropping a spoon – Physical Worldo Watching parents give the spoon back – Social BehaviorOur human perception is inaccurate. -Everyone has a different perception. Everyone has different definitions for things. Hindsight Bias-Tendency to think we knew it all along (even when we didn’t). These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture.
