Simple TerrainSimple TerrainBy Gerry MaganaBy Gerry MaganaOverviewOverview•This tutorial will give the beginner the basic instruction on how to create simple terrain.•With practice, the same tools and methods can be used to create more intricate landmasses.Basic End ResultBasic End ResultStep 1Step 1•Under the create tab, select the box tool and drag out a box in the “top” view.•Hit the n key and enter the dimensions for your landmass.Step 2Step 2•With the Polygon tab selected at the bottom, click on the box to select it.•Under the multiply tab select the Subdivide tool.•Make sure smooth is selected and click OK.•Repeat step 2 until your surface looks something like this. More polygons allows you to make specific selections for the next steps.Step 3Step 3•Click in the large green area to deselect.•With the polygons tab selected, select the polygons that are going to be your mountain tops.Step 4Step 4•Under the modify tab, click on the move tool.•In one of the Horizontal views, click and drag up until your mountains are the right height.•This may cause some problem areas but they are easily fixed.•Make a selection of all these polygons (even the visible ones) and apply the same subdivide technique.•This quickly eliminates all the holes with out having to manipulate each one individually.•If only a few holes show up, select a few points around the hole with the points tab selected at the bottom. Then use the weld tool under the detail tab.•This merges the points and closes the gap.Step 5Step 5•For landmasses that look more like hills, start with another selection as in step 3.Step 6Step 6•Under the modify tab, click the magnet tool.•In one of the horizontal views, click and drag upward on your selection.•Continue applying these tools until you get the look you are after and add your texture.•For this demo I’ve added simple presets.Basic End ResultBasic End ResultWith practice…With practice…And more practice.And more
