By Brad SandersAPCG 330When you want to clone an object many times in specific placesPlace a lot of objects uniformely, like telephone poles or cropsPlace objects randomely, like grass or spillt chipsHowever, it does not work with clip mapped objectsRotation, scale and size are self explanatoryRandom centering determines how close to the point the object will be placed, if you want a random look, give it a bigger range. Notice it’s in meters. If you want objects to sit on the ground, don’t change the y centering, but be sure to select + under y-axis to make the object sit on the top of the point.Make a box in top view with these parameters. This will be your hillside, so make it as big as you want with as many segments as you want.Manipulate the flat plan to look more like a hillsideUse the bend tool (~) in the front view to give it a nice slopeRandomize it using the Drag Net tool (;). Right click to expand it’s area of influence. You can subdivide (+D) if you want more points. It looks better with sub-patching (Tab)Name the hillside (q)When doing more advanced objects it important to name everything well because you will often have similar objects, like a few different kinds of plantsIn point mode, select the entire hill and copy (ctrl+c) to a new layerIn the top view, select points randomely, but not too manyDelete the selected pointsThe remaining points will be where grass is placed, so keep as many points as you want objectsOn a new layer, make a few boxes that you will make into simple blades of grassUsing the taper tool, make the boxes come to a pointUse the bend tool in the top view to bend the blades to the sideThey may get axis, so go to detail-Flatten-Z axisThen set their values (v) to Z = 0Name the boxes (q) and set their color to a dark greenWith your grass in the foreground, and the points of the hillside in the background, go to Multiply – Duplicate – More – Point Clone Plus (different in older versions )Use these, or similar values.Be sure to set Y-axis to +, this sets the bottom of the object to the top of the pointI textured the hillside with a simple grass image with 10 ft tiles. You can add more layers to break up the pattern, or use UV maps. But for this tutorial I kept it simple.Turn on smoothingSelect both the hillside and your cloned grass layers and copy them to a new object. (just for simplicity in layout)You can add multiple kinds of grass, and add some clip map trees and bushes.Change the grass surface so it doesn’t look so tiledAdd a nice sky or backgroundBut this tutorial was about Point Clone Plus, so I didn’t botherObject in foreground, points in backgroundYou can make it random or uniformMore polys = longer rendersGrass texture - Total Textures Vol
