Persuasion in Public CommunicationII. Two Route ThinkingI. Persuasion is an important key to public communication. In many instances, the reason for speaking in public is to convince the audience members to do a certain act or to believe a certain way. Many people use a 2-system way of thinking to decide what to believe or do. This isbecause humans are said to be cognitive misers, or lazy thinkers. II. Two Route Thinkinga. Central Route Thinking: this method of thinking involves the application of self-regulation. A person must use deliberate logic and reasoning to understand the argument fully. Many times this route of thinking is used when a certain situation is unfamiliar or new. b. Peripheral Route Thinking: this system is used in everyday situations that are familiar. It depends mostly on the use of memory, prompts, and cues. Most of the time a decision can be made rather quickly and the reasoning can be determined afterwards without much of a negative effect.
