What is problem solving?II. What is the IDEAS Model and how can you use it?Current LectureI. Solving problems is an essential part of communication that we use in our everyday lives. Problems occur on a varying scale from minor to severe and have many different ways of being handled. Part of being a good communicator is having an organized and logical way to solve problems. This involves not only recognizing that there is a problem, but coming up with a clear way to resolve the issue. II. The IDEAS Model is an acronym that can be followed to make sure your method for solving a current issue is logical and is the best possible option. a. Identify: This step is used to identify what exactly the problem is and decide howimportant each issue is. If there are multiple demands, it is important to try to prioritize which problem needs to be solved first. b. Deepen: Next, you need to try to deepen your knowledge about the situation. Do you know everything relevant to trying to work through this problem? If so, how reliable is your information and how will you use it?c. Enumerate: This step enumerates, or list one by one, all of your potential optionsto the problem solving process. This includes listing each consequence as well. It is important to keep an open mind during this step and make sure to look at eachand every angle of the issue. These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. Assess: Now, you must assess your chosen options and decide which one you think is the best way to solve the issue at hand. This requires taking into account all the information from each step in the model so far to make an initial decision.e. Scrutinize: Last, you must scrutinize your thought process. Make sure that the decision you made is the most logical given the information and choices availableto you. Could anything change in the future that could make this option a bad one? It is extremely important to keep the long term consequences in mind when following this last
