Communication is the process of stimulation meaning in the minds of others using verbal and/or nonverbal messages. The ultimate goal is to convey a shared meaning between audience members. This can be achieved through eye contact, gestures, tone of voice, etc.II. Public communication is dynamic, requires steps and may not be linear. There are nine components to public behavior listed below:a. Source: the person who creates and sends messagesb. Encoding: using cognitive skills to create a message ready to send to receivers. This can be done through skills such as argument, logic, creativity and humor. c. Message: content shared with othersd. Channel: the means through which the message is shared. Often in public communication, the channel is some type of media. e. Receiver: the individual or group that receives and decodes the message givenf. Decoding: the process of using cognitive skills to interpret the messageg. Frame of Reference: individual’s set of experiences, values, goals, attitudes, and moods. The frame of reference varies widely in any audience because no individual has exactly the same background.h. Feedback: the receiver’s response to a messagei. Noise: external and/or internal interference with message comprehension. Internal noise could be an opinion blocking the acceptance of the message, or a These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. There are four main differences between the model of general communication and public communication.a. Feedback in the public model is normally one-way. This is because the use of media as a channel prevents the audience from giving direct feedback.b. In public communication, the source’s communication is intentional.c. The general communication model generally allows for improvisation. Messages are practiced, or rehearsed, and then performed in public communication. d. More research occurs during public communication than general communication.IV. What are the Purposes of Public Communication? a. Public communication is meant to inform audience members and to convey correct and important information.b. Persuasion is another purpose of public communication. The speaker wants to influence the attitudes and behavior of the group to which he or she is speaking. c. Entertainment is the last purpose for public communication. The speaker should include humor to amuse the audience and capture the attention of the group. V. There is a disconnect between the receiver’s comprehension and the sender’s intentions in public communication. Prior knowledge and experience is used by the sender to convey his/her point. The receiver may not have had that same experienceor knowledge, and therefore a greater understanding of the concepts being discussed in lost due to
