A trait is any relatively enduring, distinguishable way that a person differs from another in a habitual and stable manor. This exists across time and situation. A state is a temporary condition, which can vary from situation to situation and also over time. II. Four Main types of Communication Traits Exist in Public Communication:a. Adaptionb. Presentationc. Aggressiond. Apprehension III. Some people experience what is called communication apprehension (CA) when in apublic setting. This occurs when a person feels anxiety or fear associated with communication. The communication can either be anticipated or real. A wide range of severity exists concerning CA. IV. What Causes Communication Apprehension?a. A person’s genetic makeup is the first factor that can cause CA. Some people are born with a predisposition for communication apprehension. These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.b. The environment in which a person is raised can also affect whether or not he/she has CA. V. There Are Four Main Types of Communication Apprehensiona. Trait Based communication affects approximately 30 percent of Americans. This is a type of CA that a person is born with. b. Communication Apprehension that is only experienced during a specific context is context based CA. For example, a person may only have CA when being interviewed for a job. c. The most specific case of CA is situation based. This is when the context, receiver, and time all affect whether or not communication apprehension is experienced. d. Communication Apprehension can also be audience based. This is when a personhas CA when speaking to a specific person or group of people. For example, you may have CA when communicating with a professor. VI. What Are The Effects of CA?a. A person can experience internal effects during CA including psychological discomfort. This stems from a lack of control over the environment. b. External effects can also occur due to CA including perspiration, shakiness, an elevated heart rate, or a dry mouth. c. Behavioral Effects of CA include withdrawal and avoidance. Withdrawal is when the quality of communication declines through decreased quality of speech, volume, or eye contact. Avoidance happens when the speaker decides to avoid public speaking at all
