Even though they are often thought to be the same thing, there is a difference between hearing and listening. Hearing is a physical process of waves and impulses being sent to the brain through the eardrum. Hearing comes naturally. Listening, on the other hand, may need to be worked on. It is a mental process of taking the information These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. Listening is an important part of communication, because you must first listen to be able to turn what you hear into something important to say. We only tend to recall a small percentage of the information we hear, so we must work to become better listeners. This is a skill that many employers as well as academic institutions greatly value. III. There are several major components of listening:a. Silenceb. Attention/Concentrationc. Questioning yourselfd. Restatinge. Withholding judgment f. Note-takingIV. How can someone become an effective listener? There are many ways to do so. The first is to reduce any distractions that may keep you from focusing on the intended message. This includes blocking out internal and external noise. Humans also process information faster than someone can speak them. This means a person should have timeto think about what is being said, before the speaker moves on. Any anxiety should be avoided when trying to listen. This can be done through relaxation techniques such as muscle relaxation, imagery, or deep breathing. V. The HURIER Model is an acronym used to help remember the steps to effecting listening.The letters stand for the following:a. Hearing: physical aspect of hearing the messageb. Understanding: use your knowledge and experience to comprehendc. Remembering: make connections to be able to recall the informationd. Interpreting: relate this information in contexte. Evaluating: form your own opinionf. Responding: provide some type of feedbackVI. When listening, there are certain types of questions that will be helpful to make sure you are getting the full amount of information from a message. You can use perception checking questions to make sure that the way you are interpreting the message is the speaker’s perception as well. Closed questions simply provide a yes or no response to factual questions you may have. Open questions are necessary to get a more detailed explanation of concepts you may be unable to fully understand. To let the speaker know your own opinions or reservations, while also getting a feeling for his/her possible biases, leading questions are helpful. Using a pronoun, such as horrible, to describe yourthoughts on the subject while asking a question, may provide a different response from the speaker than a word like wonderful. You should also probe the speaker for more details on complicated
