Kinesiology and health from ancient times to the present Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of the course the student will be able to 1 demonstrate an understanding of the importance of physical activity in daily life 2 demonstrate an understanding of the discipline of Kinesiology how it is structured the types of knowledge studied by its scholars and the implications for professional practice 3 demonstrate an understanding of professional occupations career options and qualifications associated with each area of concentration 4 demonstrate a knowledge of the history and philosophy of Kinesiology its leaders and the professional organizations and agencies of the field 5 critique the influence of economic political cultural ethnic gender and educational factors below 300 269 268 239 238 209 208 179 Course Requirements 1 Students are expected to complete assigned readings from the text and supplemental materials distributed through Moodle You are expected to read all the material covered before the lecture class session that covers those topics Recopying class notes and developing study groups or discussion groups are strongly suggested Satisfactorily complete four 4 exams Exams will consist of objective questions and will come from the appropriate book chapters class lectures guest speakers and supplemental materials 2 Exams will be administered in the computer based testing lab Note Make up exams will NOT be given without arrangements being made BEFORE the exam and will be in compliance with PS 22 The make up exam if given will be a different test and a different format PS 22 Class attendance is the responsibility of the student The student is expected to attend all classes A student who finds it necessary to miss class assumes responsibility for making up examinations obtaining lecture notes and otherwise compensating for what may have been missed The course instructor will determine the validity of a student s reason s for absences and will assist those students who have valid reasons Valid reasons for absences include 1 Illness 2 Serious family emergency 3 Special curricular requirements such as judging trips or field trips 4 Court imposed legal obligations such as subpoenas or jury duty 5 Military obligations 6 Serious weather conditions 7 Religious observances 8 Participation in varsity athletic competitions or university musical events It is imperative that you turn the guest speaker reflection papers in at the end of class Late papers will NOT BE ACCEPTED If you are not in attendance for the guest speaker you will not be able to complete the reflection THE ONLY EXCUSED ABSENCES WILL BE FOR serious family emergency special curricular requirements such as judging trips or field trips court imposed legal obligations such as subpoenas or jury duty military obligations serious weather conditions religious observances participation in varsity athletic competitions or university musical events This does not include illness I will not excuse an absence because of illness High standards of academic integrity are expected Plagiarism and cheating on any assignments tests will not be tolerated Plagiarism is the representation of another s works or ideas as one s own It includes the unacknowledged word for word use and or paraphrasing of another s work and or the inappropriate unacknowledged use of another person s ideas Plagiarism and cheating will be dealt with according to the LSU Student Code of Conduct and the Dean of Student Affairs Office 6 MOODLE Students are expected to continuously check Moodle for syllabus handouts assignments etc All of this material will be distributed through Moodle Attending class and arriving to class on time are integral to the integrity of the course You are asked to arrive on time and stay the duration of the class The instructor reserves the right to not allow late arriving students into class on the day of guest speakers Electronic devices cellular phones laptops are to be silenced The use of computers is limited to work in this class so as not to disturb your peers In order to maintain a clean and professional atmosphere no eating in class Please inform the instructor of record if you utilize the Office of Disability Services and need special accommodations The proper documentation will need to be provided to the instructor The last day for resigning from the university and or dropping courses is Monday March 30 2015 3 4 5 7 8 9 Guest Speaker Response Sheets 10 10 points each The dates for the guest speakers are posted on the tentative schedule the instructor reserves the right to change a date for a scheduled guest speaker The class will be give notification of the change with as much advance warning as possible This notification will be given as announcements made in the beginning of each class period Each class period that there is a guest speaker you will be asked to fill out a response sheet The response sheet has been posted on Moodle The response sheets will be collected at the end of the class and graded by one of the TA s Each response sheet will receive a maximum of ten points toward your final grade The response sheets should be completely and thoroughly filled out In the event that you do not attend class on a day of a guest speaker the response sheets cannot be made up If you have a question about your grade on a response sheet you need to send me an email at djacob6 lsu edu and I will ask the TA to arrange a meeting with you to discuss your evaluation High standards of academic integrity
