ENST 201 1st Edition Lecture 23 Outline of Last Lecture I Low density urban development Outline of Current Lecture I Pop Culture and Identity II Smart Growth Current Lecture I Pop Culture and Identity a Provides an identity for young people as well as for adults i Drives really bad uses for resources big houses nice cars etc b Apparently in some places the teaching of critical thinking is frowned upon c Student activism is going down i Reward people for starting new groups so too many groups for there to be real movements made by groups ii Social media people spend at least three hours a day on social media 1 All about status very shallow iii Text text because you want to receive texts 1 If you get a lot of texts it makes you feel like you are higher in society d Conyers video mom bought daughter all the cool clothes and she was baffled when her daughter was not a model student i All about insecurity and lack of confidence in yourself ii Ex Amy has sex and gets caught by little nephew symbol of a follower gets no fulfillment out of activities just does it because she wants to fit in e Cars are very big symbol of identity people opt for the most popular car even though they are not the best for the environment f Lack of public space In Conyers there is almost no public space i Importance of Public space provides free place for people to relax and meet other people people can form networks and relationships that can be transformative gives people a place to exhibit political expression people are exposed to more viewpoints so they can learn about social norms if things are frowned upon etc These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor s lecture GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes not as a substitute II ii ii Low social capital there is a lot of alienation in this age cohort kids and parents are alienated because parents don t know what they are doing social nihilism lack of buying into the social contract ex If society doesn t do anything for me I don t have to do anything for it iii Appeal to passive entertainment world with parents that work about 60 hours a week who don t have time to be around kids TV and internet appeal more to kids 1 Kind of stop living start living vicariously through the TV shows internet Smart Growth a This age cohort is understanding that graduating from college and living in the suburbs is not a great life i Ex Back then people get license at 18 but now some people don t all have licenses b This age cohort people want to live in cities where things are happening and you can go out and meet new people and form new connections c Educated people in the past like to live in suburbs but now young people are gravitating more towards cities i This is because young people are looking for convenience people can walk to stores doctor s offices etc people want to be able to walk places cultural amenities 1 America is most separated by age ex Old people young people kids can all go to pubs together in many countries 2 America has an inability to mix with older generations young people don t have the ability to extract wisdom from older generations d Smart growth is investing money to promote efficiency i Objectives of Smart growth getting people out of cars creating more active living walking using public transit keep more money in local economy by purchasing foods locally convince more people to live in city by providing entertainment and things to do ii Criticism of Smart Growth expensive no short term gratification so people are not as interested iii Libertarian groups are opponents they do not like because they believe it is big government takes away individual freedom 1 Agenda 21 biggest obstacle to smart growth think smart growth is a way to take away freedom of Americans and to impose global dictatorship on us e Smart cities do the same thing but layers on technology i Gentrification problem with smart growth increases housing cost of living 1 White flight migration of people out of city 2 Redlining bank use this as a way to determine what kinds of mortgages to give to certain neighborhoods a Risky for banks to invest in neighborhoods that have a certain number of minorities b Banks are a huge pusher of sprawl c Knocked out possibilities for children of low income families are very slim d Paris ethnic distribution inner cities are full of high income people and outer city is where more low income people live
