ENST201 1st Edition Lecture 20 Outline of Last Lecture I No Class Outline of Current Lecture I II Urban Planning Why did this structure develop Current Lecture I Urban Planning II a American sprawl places are far apart so need a car to get places SOV single occupancy vehicles infrastructure is built around cars for example when improvements to city are made it is made to roads and not sidewalks or trails etc i People are limited if they do not have cars so it is hard for people to have a job and it is expensive to maintain a car ii This sort of infrastructure is bad for people too young to drive and a burden to older people because they cannot safely travel in a car alone iii It is inefficient it requires a large amount of energy and water iv Only developed country where quality of schools is hit and miss 1 One of the greatest blocks in economic mobility 2 Way we fund our schools may be one of the reasons for sprawl v Suburbs promote homogeneity which inhibits lower income people to move in 1 Also discourages elderly people form moving in vi Sprawl has contributed to segregation in America between age gender etc vii All the time in the car puts a strain on families viii Opportunity costs If commuting several hours in the car each day there are sacrifices that need to be given up like family time hobby time etc 1 Get less exercise Why has this structure developed a Quality of living in cities is always bad b American dream has constructed our way of life c promotes urbanization and industrialization d Local Government towns and counties are responsible for ty e of power given to towns enabling legislation state e HOH is very democratic hard for other parties to change anything f Luke Roads Gridlock for a few years traffic will move better however after a few years traffic will get bad again g Large roads like 540 will make traffic worse i Infrastructure tool because people will build more communities closer to the road people use road as tool to people to build life around ii Increasing distances that people have to drive h Public transit is not used as a infrastructure tool These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor s lecture GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes not as a substitute
