The BeatlesCurrent Lecture The Year 1964- Top 10 singles during the 1964 were pop-oriented.o The Dixie Cup – “Chapel of Love” (girl group)o The Supremes – “Baby Love” (Motown)o The Beach Boys – “I Get Around” (surf music)o Roy Orbison – “Pretty Woman” (pop rockabilly)o Bobby Vitten – “There! I’ve said it again” (teen idol)o Peter Paul – “Blowin’ in the Wind” (folk revival)o Frankie Valli – “Rag Doll” (rock/pop)o The Animals – “House of the Rising Sun” (folk cover-British)o The Beatles had three out of the top ten hits of this year.  The British Invasion- The Beatles led this British Invasion.- The Rolling Stones come to America.- James Brown – “I Feel Good”- British artists became fascinated with American music.- These British musicians knocked off some of their American heroes off the charts.  The Beatles- There were popular in England and somewhat popular in America, due to radio play, before they made their way to America.These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. Then, Lennon began playing with Paul McCartney.- The initial drummer was Pete Best, while the initial bass player was Stuart Sutcliffe.- The name of The Beatles came from their love for Buddy Holly and the Crickets.- The Beatles played gigs at The Cavern Club in their hometown of Liverpool.- They fashioned their style from The Rockers with their leather jackets.- The members of The Beatles were charming, but did have sex appeal.- They signed with their manager, Brian Epstein, and were given a record deal with EMI. After they were signed, they changed their image to suits instead of leather jackets. They also obtained a new drummer, Ringo Star, when the old drummer was fired. The Beatles then had a tour secured in America.- Paul McCartney eventually became the bass player.- Their producer George Martin was assigned to them. He has a classical background and sometimes played piano in their songs. Martin helped choose which songs they wrote were to be recorded.- Lennon and McCartney began writing together. They soon started to write separately.- The Beatles captured early rock ‘n’ roll with folk musical elements.- They came to the United States after the assassination of JFK.- They would re-release their songs from Britain to the United States.- A Hard Day’s Night was their last album that sounded like the early Beatles.- “Yesterday” was influenced by folk music. Since Bob Dylan challenged them because of their lyrics, this song contained more meaningful lyrics. Only Paul McCartney was on the recording for this song. This song is the most covered.- In 1965, they released the album Rubber Soul. This was their coming-of-age album. This transformed them into the rest of their career. Every song on this album sounds different. The first example of The Beatles using the Indian sitar was shown in this album. George Harrison became friends with Ravi Shankar, who is the best sitar player.These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture.
