Punk RockCurrent Lecture Singer-Songwriter Genre- This genre borrowed from several types of rock; however, it was much softer. - This genre consists of several critics and fans.- James Tayloro He defined the role of singer-songwriter of the 70s.o Taylor was noticed by Apple Records. He was their first non-British artist.o He had a heroin addiction.o The album Sweet Baby James was influenced by his rehab. One song off the album was affected by rehab, suicide of his friend, and break-up of his formerband. This song was titled “Fire and Rain.”- Carole Kingo She was a songwriter for the Brill Building.o Taylor used her in his band as a piano player. He pushed her to record on her own. They never had a romantic relationship, but they were really close.o Her album Tapestry was a blockbuster album. It won four Grammys. It includes James Taylor singing backup in some songs. “You’ve Got a Friend” was one hit from the album that Taylor covered later.o She did not do drugs or sleep around with people like most artists.- Neil Youngo He toned down the volume without toning down the intensity.o Young is known as the Godfather of Grunge.o In his song “Hey Hey My My,” the lyrics reference to Elvis (the king) and Johnny Rotten (from the Sex Pistols).These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. They said that it didn’t sound like Neil Young.  Punk Rock- The Velvet Underground began this transition into punk rock from their music knownas proto punk.- Punk rock is known for having monotone vocals, pulsing beat, and abandoning blues-based elements.- The origin of punk is known as slang that came out of prisons.- Iggy Pop and the Stoogeso Iggy Pop was a crowd surfer.o He wore leather pants and no shirt.o “Search and Destroy”- MC5 (Motor City 5)o MC5 was a Midwestern band.o Their music consisted of an angry edge of the hippie movement/psychedelia.o “Kick Out the Jams”- The New York Dollso They came out of the early rock movement in NY.o NY is actually where punk rock first began.- The Birth of the Punk Scene: CBGBo CBGB originally stood for country, bluegrass, and blues.o CBGB was a hole-in-the-wall bar.o Some punk artists got noticed and signed to record labels at this bar.o Ramones The Ramones were the first to get signed for punk rock at CBGB. Joey Ramone seemed anti-social. They recorded short, fast songs. “Beat Off the Brat”o Patti Smith She was also signed from CBGB. She sang harder rock and angry punk. Her album Horses put her on the map nationally. It featured pulsating beat and monotone vocals, but they are toned down. “Kimberly” is about giving birth.o The Talking HeadsThese notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is bestused as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute. They also grew out of the CBGB.  They were the fourth group signed. Their music was referred to New Wave, a toned down punk rock.- Malcolm McLaren and British Punko Malcolm McLaren owned a store in London called Sex, which was an anti-establishment store.o There was an anarchist movement in England during this time in Britain.o The Sex Pistols The lead singer name is Johnny Rotten. They had an angrier edge to punk rock. “Anarchy in the U.K.”o The Clash They were equally angry as The Sex Pistols, but they had more to say andwere more musical. The Clash even had some hits on the top charts. They were influenced by reggae.  “London Calling”These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture.
