Motown RecordsCurrent Lecture Soul Artists- Ray Charleso He was a very influential soul artist. However, he received much backlash from the church when he began his soul career. o He had a classic soul sound. His “I Got a Woman” was sampled by Kanye Westin his song “Gold Digger.” o He became known as the Genius of Soul because he was an amazing singer, instrumentalist, and band leader. o He became blind when he was a kid; his family believed he became this way since he witnessed his little brother drown. o Charles was blacklisted from radio stations because of his sexual content. “Hey (What’d I Say)” was one of these sexual songs.o During live performances, he would play slow songs slower and vice versa.- James BrownThese notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. If they made mistakes, Brown would dock their pay.o His biggest hit was “I Got You (I Feel Good),” which features a choppy guitar.o James Brown also becomes one of the fathers of funk. o Brown pointed the way towards hip hop.o He also becomes influential on African pop.o He became known for repetition and riff-oriented music.- Sam Cookeo He originally played with the gospel band The Soul Stirrers. o Sam Cooke used the name Dale Cooke when he began his non-gospel career so he wouldn’t offend the church.o Cooke had a smoother approach to soul and became known as Sweet Soul.o He became inspired by both the civil rights movement and Bob Dylan to writethe song “A Change Is Gonna Come.”o Sam Cooke was shot by a hotel manager in the 1960’s. Motown Records- Soul music split in two directions after the 1950’s: Motown and southern soul.- Motown Records was stationed in Detroit, Michigan. - This company was more pop-oriented soul music.- They tried to smooth out the soul sound in order to create hits. Their building contained a sign that read, “Hittsville, U.S.A.”- Berry Gordy started Motown Records. He was a fan of Sam Cooke.- This record company rivaled and sometimes surpassed major record companies. - Only Motown Records survived the British Invasion.- Berry Gordy hired several people in order to make hitso Maxine Powell: a teacher for the Motown Finishing School, which was a school for musicians to learn mannerism.o “Cholly” Atkins: choreographer o The Funk Brothers: this band played in all of the songs produced with this company, but they didn’t obtain any credit.o Songwriters Holland, Doxier, and Holland (H-D-H): They were the most successful songwriters of this company.
